Singapore: Top 10 Rights of a Woman under the Women’s Charter

There is an act for Singaporean women which keep their rights safe. This act is for monogamous marriage, solemnization, and registration of such marriages.

It includes provisions to modify and consolidate the divorce, the rights, and duties of married persons, protection of the family, maintenance of wives, helpless husband and children and punishment of crimes against women and girls, and to provide for casual treatment cases.

1. In this act, the wife has been given the right to use own surname and name separately.

2. A married woman can have personal property and it’s not necessary that her property belongs to her husband.

3. To ensure a happy family environment, there are equal rights for husband and wife.

4. Without any exceptional agreement housekeeping allowance which is given by the husband to wife will be followed by both parties and treated as equal.

5. If the husband has a debt then the wife is not liable to pay the debt

6. Gifts may be treated as attempts to defraud creditors which is given by the husband to wife and if the husband becomes bankrupt then it may be claimed by creditors.

7. For business, a wife can loan money to her husband. If the husband becomes bankrupt in business, wife has the right to reclaim the loan as a creditor.

8. According to Section 69 of the Women’s Charter, any married woman whose husband fails to provide proper maintenance can apply for maintenance of monthly allowance.

9. According to section 68 of the women’s charter, parents have the duty to keep their children.

10. Divorce can be filed only after 3 years of marriage and not without a valid reason.
