What plans does S'pore have for Li Jiawei?

AFTER the euphoria of winning a medal at the Olympics, what worries me most about what lies ahead is Li Jiawei's announcement that she will be studying at Beijing University and playing for the school's women's table- tennis team in October.

For her to say this right after winning a silver medal for Singapore perhaps shows a feeling of insecurity on her part.

As she herself has said, she has been playing for Singapore all these years and is getting tired. Li also feels that she has neglected her studies.




What are Singapore's plans for Li? What exit strategy do we have for her?

At the Team Singapore homecoming event at Raffles City on Monday, one man in attendance who did not get much attention was Mr Tan Howe Liang, Singapore's first and only individual Olympic medal-winner.

To the few who went up to him and asked for his autograph, he jokingly asked for a dollar for each autograph.

Li may have been asking herself: Is this how I will end up?

Forget our sports school, our sports programmes and our hunt for foreign talent. The way we treat a national hero like Mr Tan speaks the loudest.

What's wrong to returning home?

Anyways, just in case you are not a CHINESE born citizen, or perhaps SINGAPOREAN, it's very natural for CHINESE from CHINA to return home after they make some nice income in SINGAPORE.

From my point of view, (I do respect your point of view, don't get me wrong), there is absolutely nothing wrong for the CHINESE from CHINA, recruited by SINGAPOREAN Government to want to GO HOME, back to China.

It's nothing wrong for them to further their study.

I believe it's really their right to do so.

In fact, everyone in Singapore do have the right to choose their own life path, and if they could not achieve anything, they should not feel bad, but strive harder to achieve want they want, rather than getting angry about something that is totally not related

By the way, if SINGAPOREANS are so good, why not they represent SINGAPORE for Table Tennis? and other sports?

Why resort to getting talents elsewhere?

This need to be reflected.

From my own opinion, I guess the population pool size in Singapore may perhaps be too small, around 4 Million people... probably one of the smallest nations on earth.

But then is it wrong to get overseas talent to represent Singapore, for Singapore's glory and honor?

To each his own, everyone is entitled to think what they like, but I would say, NOT ENTIRE Singapore spits at Li Jiawei

So, choice of words have to be discerning.

Anyways, just think that we Singaporeans need to be more thoughtful, and strive for your own goals... and stop pointing fingers at people who have done their jobs... to each his own.

If you go overseas, do you seriously think people will hold Sinkapore in awe and respect that Sinkapore is a table tennis power? Besides, what's so great about a one-time achievement that is not likely to be sustainable?

The most likely thing that comes out of this is foreigners will think that Sinkaporeans are losers and cannot survive without them. And this is already happening.

Is winning the medal justified on the economic front? Can you eat an Olympic medal? Sinkapore imports foreigners to generate wealth for the whole of Sinkapore. But what wealth is being generated by winning a one time medal?

It is not the fault of LJW, the govt should know very well what will happen when you get FT. Foreigners are not as shallow as the PAP to think that money is the solution to everything. This leadership of LHL is slowly getting out of hand. With a leader like that, that is what happen.
