The Singapore Government Public Utility Board (PUB) has just signed an agreement with French-based utility company Suez Environnement for three research projects in waste water treatment, storm water management and automated meter reading.

In a joint press statement today, PUB said:
Under this partnership, both parties will work together to use information and communication technologies and analytical software solution to develop a smart water grid.
However, the Paris-based conglomerate has been hit by a slew of scandals in recent years, especially over profiting from water supply. During the late 90s, the Suharto-led Indonesia Government then signed a contract with Suez over water privatization. Throughout the 15 years of privatization, Suez did not improve the water system, extend water access to 7.5 million Jakartans and resolve water quality issues, despite a rise in public administration payment to the company totalling up to Rp 590 Billion (SGD$59 million). This led to a campaign by residents, unions and civil society organizations in Indonesia which eventually prompted today’s Indonesia President Jokowi Widodo to promise to buy back Suez’s shares in the national water operator.

Over in the United States, Suez Environnement has also a bad record in water service delivery and quality. You may read more from here. There are many campaigns in US over the privatization of water supply and most of Suez’s scandals revolves around profiteering of water supply.

Do you think basic necessities like electricity water supply should be privatized in Singapore?
