Altogether S$1.24 billion for 3 dinosaur fossils and construction of museum. For the rest of the exhibits, probably borrow them from the other museums.

Will you donate?

Singapore museum raises funds to buy three dinosaur fossils

SINGAPORE, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The upcoming Natural History Museum in Singapore launched a drive on Sunday to raise 12 million Singapore dollars (9.8 million U.S. dollars) by the end of the month to buy three dinosaur fossils from a company in Wyoming, the United States.

The three dinosaurs on offer from the company Dinosauria International, thought to be a family, were found between 2007 and last year in the United States, the Straits Times reported on Sunday.

Appollo and Prince, the two adult diplodocid sauropods, is about 24 meters long, while the baby Twinky is about 12 meters.

The natural history museum is expected to be completed by 2014. The three dinosaur fossils will cost 870 million Singapore dollars, and an additional 370 million Singapore dollars will be spent to set up the exhibition.

"They wanted the museum to tell the story of the history of life and evolution. Dinosaurs are the history of life," said Professor Peter Ng, director of the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, referring to the approval from the scientific advisory committee for the acquisition.

The Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research of the National University of Singapore went on an intensive fund raising campaign last year to build the dedicated Natural History Museum.

The museum said it has found the amount to be challenging. It is therefore appealing for help from the public through the media.

"The idea was always to have a central gallery and put something there that would make people go 'Whoa!,'" said Ng.

I say why not. Singaporeans are fully employed, we have fully developed democracy, its young nation and its about time that we move towards the arts, culture, heritage.

Lets face it, the average Singaporean has 2 kids, an apartment and a car by the age of 28. They are well educated, they have secure jobs and besides travelling on annual holidays, we got to get them to engage on the soft side of life. It took the PAP 50 years of careful mangement to reach this stage. Let be like NY and London where the best museums are open to all.

If they're looking for old fossils I'm sure they can have the one belonging to the "last leaf"

Just have to wait a while longer. As for paying millions, Sporeans have already paid billions.

Re: Singapore museum buying 3 dinosaur fossils for S$870 million, launches donation d

There's obviously a mistake with the figures, no dinosaur is worth 870 million dollars !!!

I think the figures should be 8.7 million for dinosaur and 3.7 million for setup ....

I agree the amount look suspiciously like it includes the new museum and all. $870 million is no small change.

Why go to the expense?

We still got one old Dinosaur still alive and kicking at Oxley Road...

Re: Singapore museum buying 3 dinosaur fossils for S$870 million, launches donation d

It is obviously a mistake in the decimal point. The bones will cost 8.7 million and the exhibit 3.7 million making a total of 12.4 million. That's why they are only seeking donations of 12 million.

I think you figure is right totall $12.4 million not $1.2billion. We have stupid journalist and also editor. Plus too lazy to check the actual figure if not right.
Singapore news reporter always mess with the figure.

You are correct that why only asking for $12m donation. If $1.2 billion in total asking only $12m charity donation that only 1% that was really funny.

very good way of screwing Singaporeans...first they ask for donations...then when the white elelphant is set up, the entrance fee is 50 dollars.

double whammy...

Re: Singapore museum buying 3 dinosaur fossils for S$870 million, launches donation d

are we talking about Wonderland or Disneyland here ?

I am a museum goer for almost all countries I've visited. And I have to say the Singapore one is easily one of the worst. I am being very objective here... They are usually quite good with marketing but the lack of display content is just disappointing.

I understand the case which argues we are a young nation without an ancient culture etc etc.. but you just have to look at their operating model.. there are more restaurants and bars than exhibits.

If the museum is going to be run like another profit making business, then importing a few bones will not make any thing better.

please don't compare the British Museum and the New York museums with Singapore. It takes a long time, a long culture and a long history in order to put together a museum of that scale. It is not simply, buying things and stuffing it.

We are lacking the history and culture. Buying dinosaur bones and displaying it does not cut it. What is the story? Are these things found here? No. Are they natives? No.

WTF...a roving exhibition, yes, loan them and display them for a few months, yup...but house them permanently at a cost of a few millions? No.

And just 3 skeletons? For fuck? Neither here nor there.

House something of relevance and meaningful that we can draw relevance to.

Secondly, these established museums in London and New York are so rich in exhibits that you cannot possibly finish walking in a day. Singapore? U can finish it in 2 hours flat.

I say, go for the bold move, have the largest sex museum or gambling museum lah...something radical and out of the world.

See, we lack the scale.
