SINGAPORE — A woman assaulted her ex-girlfriend and wrongfully confined her for nine days, a court heard.
Noorfarahain Mohd Noorudin, 27, also assaulted her 34-year-old former lover, forced her to strip off her clothes, took a photo of her naked and threatened to circulate it unless the victim did her bidding. Noorfarahain’s new boyfriend also took part in the assault.
At the State Courts on Monday (1 July), Noorfarahain was jailed for three years, two months and six weeks.
She pleaded guilty to five out of 13 charges - for drug consumption, causing hurt, criminal intimidation, extortion and wrongful confinement.
The remaining counts - including cheating, theft, insulting the modesty of a woman and destroying an identity card by cutting it in half - were considered in sentencing.
Punched, slapped, kicked
Noorfarahain met the victim while they were working at Dunkin’ Donuts. They were in a romantic relationship for about a year until November 2017.
On 9 February last year, the victim told Noorfarahain that she would go to her flat to look after her five-year-old son.
When the victim reached the flat at 2am on 9 February, Noorfarahain and her boyfriend Muhammad Indra Mohamed Yusli, 23, started arguing with the victim about making Noorfarahain’s life “miserable”, the court heard. Indra is also Noorfarahain’s cousin.
Also present were Indra’s brother Muhammad Iskanda Mohamed Yusli, 21, and Indra’s friend Joreemy Abdullah, 27.
Indra punched the victim’s face while Iskanda punched her jaw with a metal keychain. They kept punching the victim until she fell to the ground.
Joreemy also kicked the victim’s back while Noorfarahain slapped the victim’s cheek several times. Throughout the assault, the victim did not retaliate.
The assailants eventually stopped their attack and Indra told the victim to wash her face and clean off blood from the floor.
Noorfarahain then took all of the victim’s possessions including her wallet and mobile phone while Indra told her that she was not allowed to leave the apartment until she recovered from her injuries. He also told her to do household chores. She was made to sleep on the living room floor throughout her period of wrongful confinement.
The victim was unable to inform her employer that she wasn’t able to turn up at work. She also wasn’t able to tell anyone about her whereabouts.
Threatened with nude photo
A week later, on 16 February, Noorfarahain threatened to injure the victim unless she got naked and allowed a photo of her naked body to be taken.
“The accused made the threat by clenching her fist and telling the victim that she would beat her up. The victim was frightened and she stripped off all her clothes,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Yen Seow.
After taking the image, Noorfarahain told the victim, “I have your photo. This is your dignity. So remember before you want to do anything. If you try to run away, I will make the photo viral on the Internet.”
The next day, Noorfarahain cut the victim’s identity card in half and slapped her face.
Unbeknown to the victim, the assailant also used the victim’s phone to text her mother, asking for $3,000. But the victim’s mother said she did not have the money.
On 18 February, Noorfarahain again texted the victim’s mother, this time asking for $200. The mother transferred the sum into the victim’s bank account.
Noorfarahain then ordered the victim to withdraw the money and hand it over, threatening to post her nude photo online unless she complied. The victim did not know where the money came from.
The ex-lover also used the victim’s phone to text a close friend of the victim, and similarly cheat her into transferring $100 into her account.
On the same day, Noorfarahain instructed the victim to take a bus to her home, and later to a hospital. The victim did not try to escape because she feared that her nude photo would be put online, the court heard.
On 19 February last year, the victim walked unsteadily into Yishun North Neighbourhood Police Centre looking weak and with a swollen face. An ambulance took her to hospital.
Later that day, policemen arrested Noorfarahain on suspicion of drug consumption. Her urine tested positive for methamphetamine, commonly known as meth or Ice. She admitted taking the drug with Indra on 18 February.
The maximum penalty for causing hurt is two years’ jail and a $5,000 fine.
For criminal intimidation, Noorfarahain could have been jailed for two years along with a fine.
The punishment for extortion is a jail term of between two and five years, along with caning for male offenders below 50.
For wrongful confinement for more than three days but less than 10 days, Noorfarahain could have been jailed for two years along with a fine.
Indra has been charged and his case is pending before the courts.
Iskanda and Joreemy have yet to be charged for their roles in the assault on the victim.
