I just noticed Hypocrite-the also posted on this in the other thread :

Wearing a tudung interferes with other protective gears a nurse might need to wear in certain situations.

Looks like the pappies are going to go full retard on this matter. Not surprised at all.

Starcraft Terran posted :

I hope some government people read internet forums like this HWZ forum and read our opinions.

If someone from the government does, please consider the following point :

Please do not make any changes.

It's valid to consider human rights, individual freedom, and multiculturalism, and an argument could be made to make a change.

However, there is also a need to consider a significant underlying current: one of religious fundamentalism, and an ever-present tug-of-war between religious fundamentalism and religious moderation.

This has implications for national unity, social cohesion, safety and wellbeing, and ideological defense of the people and the country.

I know it looks harmless and it's a small gesture only.

However, it could very well gain momentum, snowball over time, and then there would be a bigger problem.

Let's take a look at some historical examples :

In the past, in Afghanistan, before the Taliban took power, women went to universities. They didn't wear the hijab. Women became doctors.

After Taliban took power, women must don niqab, women doctors cannot examine male patients. Male doctors cannot examine female ones, etc.

Women must not go out after 10pm. Women must go out accompanied by male relatives, etc.

How did the Afghan society go from one point to another point ? From point A to point B ?

This is all about ideology, thoughts, beliefs.

As such, any space, and any domains, where secularism prevails, even if it's small and it's just a sliver of our daily life, is to be cherished and preserved. Why ? To preserve the safety and wellbeing of everyone, including, first and foremost, our Muslim brothers and sisters. They are the ones who would be the first victims of any problems, they would be at the frontlines and endure the consequences. Again, we can take a look at the Afghanistan example.

Therefore, this small space and domain, where currently there is a uniform code where nurses must follow a certain uniform, should continue.

It's better to be safe than sorry.

It's better to be over-prudent than to take risks.

Please think of the overall long term wellbeing of the people and the country.

Unlike Starcraft Terran's concerns, mine is that of sympathy & empathy for the girls who might be community-pressurized into conforming against their personal wishes, something which the PAP doesn't publicly want to take into consideration, for political reasons :

First is tudung
Next will be weekend to change from Sunday to Friday
Next all restaurants must be halal
Next useless Malay language to be compulsory in schools
Next civil servants must pass Malay Language to be promoted
Next PM position must be a Malay
Next no one can keep dogs as pet
and list goes on and on.
