Mr Lee wrote in his blog that Workfare is a better policy option than a minimum wage.

THE Government has restated its stance against a minimum wage in a blog post by Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Manpower Lee Yi Shyan.

The blog post joins a debate in local newspapers on whether Singapore should follow in Hong Kong's footsteps, by legislating a minimum wage to protect low-wage workers.

Hong Kong did so in July.

Mr Lee's post was uploaded onto the Ministry of Manpower's blog (www.momsingapore.blogspot. com) yesterday.

In it, he referred to two opinion pieces by National University of Singapore (NUS) economists published in The Straits Times two weeks ago.

Mr Lee expressed his support for the arguments of Dr Lim Chin of the NUS Business School, who wrote that a minimum wage would make the labour market more rigid and hurt employment opportunities of low-wage workers.

Singapore govt always think they are intellectually superior to their counterparts from HK and Taiwan. I suppose HKies and Taiwanese suffer from a heavy crutch mentality and not Singaporeans. Taiwanese and HK SMEs are so crippled by min wage laws that they are thriving in China with derring-do and we must be missing Singapore SMEs somewhere way up in front?

workfare scheme is the way to go. the aid is targeted directly to singaporeans.

with minimum wage, all the exploited cheap foreign labour (maids, construction workers, malaysian aunties working in our factories etc) will see a bump in salaries. good for them. but it makes singapore inc less competitive. the line and floor managers/supervisors (which includes many singaporeans) will lose their jobs if costs escalates too high.

workfare should be increased to give each singaporean a minimum wage level. every singaporean who works should be guaranteed $20k/yr through workfare supplements.

What rubbish ! Increase it . You can be sure all will rush here by the plane loads !

Exploitation is EVIL. To remain relevant, be more productive and move up the value chain.

Singapore's Human Capital Management believes that the Tripartite Agreement between MOM / NTUC / SNEF would be able to resolve a lot of issues from ill treatment to compensation.

They have thrown away minimum wages because they feel its meaningless, put it too low the Companies will abuse it, they will definitely pay all the blue collar worker the minimum wages as that's the law. Set it too high the businesses cannot survive, hence they let the market funds its on level.

Employment laws are pro employers rather than employees in Singapore, if a company fires a staff without reason, the compensation is based on what's stated (notice period) in the employment contract. If the employer refuses or delays salaries there are absolutely no fines or jail terms to prevent this.

China and even Hong kong labor laws takes care of her people more than ours...

Minion Gan's policy of importing cheap foreign talents is the real farking reason why lowly paid peasants are unemployable! In particular, the S Pass has hammered white collar peasants when merchants gleefully retrenched local peasants and hire cheaper $2500 per month foreign peasant! Shame!

If the foreginer and local are paid the same min wage, the foreigner is still more costly due to the levy. Unless they are paid lower to equalise with the local.

at the end of the day when local & foreigner with similar qualifications & experience r contending for the same position. the job goes to the foreigner.

y foreigner over local? if hire local, company need to fork out CPF contribution. while they can tell the foreign employee to co-broke the levy, or in some cases, the levy is born by the FT

They don't bother protecting the local workers, while the minister of state have a minimum wage of million of dollars, can talk cock!.

Also, who's paying for the Workfare scheme? Taxpayers!

Who will pay for min wages? Employers! That frees taxpayers and loyal Singaporeans from having to "subsidise" unproductive bosses.

Time to squeeze the exploiters and force them to become more productive.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Manpower Lee Yi Shyan has nothing more than a B Eng. from NUS! :oIo: :oIo: :oIo:

And yet he is given authority by the PAPies over economic issues involving the country! WTF! Can't the PAP find someone more educated and within their range of capable reasoning to fit the jobscope!!!

KKN! This is a fine example of paying millions for a twit! This twit even has the audacity to speak out instead of keeping quiet like Lim Boon Heng.

min wages will not help sinkies, only help FT. The only way to help FT is prevent them to come in the first place.
We do not need FT. We can adjust and cope without FT. FT is a drug and singapore is addict to FT. Just have to go to rehap.

I dun mind min. wage for Sing. workers but what I do not want is to pay $1k to $1.5k pm for my Filipino maid when the policy is set.

Cannot afford! Maybe $500 - $800 still ok.

The minimum wage should be peg to the top earners similar to the ministers except in different percentage or alternatively the minimum wage should peg to certain percentage of minister's pay. This will ensure no one will be leave behind. This will keep those labor intensive industries out of sg and keep productivity up. Overall good for sg as we do not have to rely on ft and avoid social problems or infrastructure problems.

This sounds like a really cool idea!

Minium wage for SINGAPOREANS, your Filipino maids salary should be peg to demand & supply.

We have to protect our won ricebowls, if your are paid $1,500 a month, you employ a msid for $1,500, does that make sense to you?

Let's start using terms that make sense to the situation.

Our issue is the large number of WHITE COLLAR foreign workers and not foreign workers in the construction, cleaning and shipbuilding and repair industries. For these industries, we have relied on foreign workers since the 60s and 70s.

Let's not lump all foreign workers, FWs together like how the 154th and the PAPies' propaganda machinery wants us to do so as to confound the issue.

It is WHITE COLLAR foreign workers that we want to concentrate on. As or maid salaries, without the maid levy or perhaps a lower maid levy we can afford to pay our maids an increment of $150-$200 a month.

Let us be unlike the PAPies who are fascists and have no concern for the common folk. Let us be genuinely happy that even the lowest in our society can earn a decent living and live a life of happiness even as they serve us and allow us to earn our profits.

In any organisation the structure are mostly pyramid ie. for say every engineer there need to be 5 to 10 supporting workers. If the number of workers are reduce so will the need for ft.
