First day back to school! Our P1 students are entering a new environment today, and the rest of the primary school student body will be joining them tomorrow.

To all students - I wish you all a wonderful school year in 2022! Make the most of your time in school. May this be the beginning of a lifelong process of discovery, learning and the building of enduring values and friendships. These are far more important outcomes than the narrow pursuit of academic grades

We had our first MTF press conference of 2022 today, where we took stock of our current Covid-19 situation and the outlook for the coming weeks.

Safe management measures remain important as we face an imminent wave of Omicron. As we look forward to Chinese New Year, let’s continue to exercise social responsibility, and help keep our family and friends safe.

Agencies combing CCTV footage of NYE gathering at Clarke Quay: Lawrence Wong

SINGAPORE — Enforcement agencies are combing through CCTV footage of the spontaneous New Year's Eve gathering at Clarke Quay, and different individuals will be called in for "interviews", said Finance Minister Lawrence Wong on Wednesday (5 January).

Enforcement actions will be taken against those deemed to have breached COVID-19 safe management rules, added the co-chair of the multi-ministry task force on COVID-19 (MTF).

Speaking to reporters at a virtual media briefing, Wong noted that the crowd "got caught up in the moment" and soon swelled to more than a hundred. "I can understand why people are keen to celebrate the New Year, but such actions are not acceptable, especially when we are still in the midst of a pandemic."

According to media reports that cited eyewitnesses, the crowd grew too large for police officers on the scene to control. Wong did not address whether sufficient numbers of enforcement officers had been deployed on the final day of 2021 at Clarke Quay, a popular spot for partygoers.

On Monday, the MTF issued a statement on the incident, calling it a "potential superspreading event". Agencies are investigating the matter, it said.

Grit, resilience, and empowerment — these are the qualities I see in all our students across our schools in Singapore.
In this unpredictable and volatile world, you will come across challenges and setbacks, even after you graduate and enter the working world.
You may face a long and winding road towards your goals.
But don't give up. Let your challenges make you stronger.
Congrats to Singapore Management University's graduating cohort for 2021!

Group of 5 rule, other COVID SMM, to remain through CNY: Lawrence Wong

1641573474498.png

SINGAPORE – Social groups of five, and other current COVID-19 safe management measures (SMM), will continue to be in place through the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY).

The official public holidays for CNY fall on 1 and 2 February, but celebrations and visitations traditionally occur for 15 days.

Referring to the Omicron wave of the virus, Finance Minister and co-chair of the COVID multi-ministry taskforce (MTF) Lawrence Wong said at a virtual press conference on Wednesday (5 January), "I can't imagine the wave passing before Chinese New Year. So, very clearly, through this period and through Chinese New Year, the current rules will be maintained."

Wong spoke about an incident of overcrowding at Clarke Quay during a New Year's Eve celebration. "But if we were to let our guard down and take unnecessary risk, then transmission will be amplified. The infection wave will be much larger...And we may have no choice but to tighten. Take the example of what happened with the New Year's Eve celebration at Clarke Quay," he said.

"What happened was that people started gathering together, they got caught up in the moment and soon, we had a crowd of more than 100 people at that location."

Many, he said, flouted SMM rules, and may have caused a potential spread of COVID.

"We don't intend to relax (SMM) further at this time and we will try not to have to tighten," Wong said.

The Ministry of Health on Tuesday confirmed 842 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore, bringing the country's total case count to 281,596.

The weekly infection growth rate rose to above 1 for the first time since 12 November 2021. The rate, or the ratio of community cases for the past week over the week before, is now at 1.09, and has been climbing since a low of 0.52 on 24 December 2021.

There were also three more deaths due to the disease, with total fatalities at 832 as of Tuesday.

Lawrence invites you on a Budget journey.

Lawrence Wong

The Budget is more than just dollars and cents - it‘s about our people and our nation.
Every year, the Government comes together to discuss how we prioritise our finite resources. These discussions last a few weeks, and range from how we will continue supporting Singaporeans now, to how we will also build a brighter future for all.
Ahead of Budget Day on 18 February, I've been sitting down with different groups of Singaporeans to hear your hopes and dreams, and also your needs and concerns - whatever age you are or background you are from.
I invite you to join us on this Budget 2022 journey, as we work together towards a fairer and more inclusive Singapore, and a greener home.

We concluded our first @parl_sg sitting of 2022! Glad to see robust debates on topics including Covid-19, to financing Singapore's future, and transiting to a greener nation.

As we deal with the immediate challenges from Covid-19, we are also preparing ahead for a post-pandemic future. Several @papsingapore MPs filed a parliamentary motion today calling on the government to advance Singapore’s inclusive transition towards a low-carbon society, and put up many useful suggestions.

In the coming weeks, my colleagues from various Ministries will update on the progress of green initiatives for the year ahead. We're taking concrete leaps to turn our #SGGreenPlan into reality

Lawrence happy to see CDC vouchers being used.

Lawrence Wong

Heartened to see that many residents have been using their Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers at hawker stalls and neighbourhood shops - including at Our Limbang. I hope you find them useful in helping with daily household expenses; these vouchers also help support our heartland merchants.
You can visit go.gov.sg/cdcv to claim your vouchers if you haven’t done so. Each household can redeem up to $100 worth of vouchers, so do share them with your parents or grandparents, or even take them out for a meal!
Thanks everyone, for staying united during these challenging times. Let's continue to support each other.
