That is the normal way it is done. However if they follow SOP, Minister Lui would not be able to gain any brownie points and contain the political damage of this incident.

If he wants those brownie points, he will have to man up, act like a mighty PAP Minister and ask for her resignation.

In any case, these are new times and a new PAP. If Ministers can cry and a Prime Minister can apologise, why can't a blundering CEO be asked to resign?

SMRT is a private entity,no minister however high can demand a CEO resignation.As in the case of sub prime fiasco....no US president can demand the resignation of any of the bank's CEO regardless if they were the root cause to its biggest financial meltdown in history.

But Singapore do have it's idiocracies.

In a govt or a GLC, the govt will rarely allow you to resign as it directly indicate their flaws. They will take sometime and move you over to another role. This govt has never admitted to anything until the GE when the son made the apology.

SINGAPORE - Facing the media for the first time since SMRT experienced one of its worst rail disruptions to date, SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa today apologised to the 127,000 commuters who were affected by the incident yesterday.

On public calls for her and other senior management to resign, Ms Saw said that while she would consider resigning if necessary, she would reserve her opinion on the matter for the time being.

She said SMRT will learn from the incident and improve on giving better information.

"We do apologise especially those who experienced considerable inconvenience... What we can promise is that we will spare no effort in preventing such an occurrence," said Ms Saw.

"I will personally look into improving our incident management plan, especially in the areas of giving timely and better information, as well as crowd management, in both our stations and in the trains," she added.

SMRT cited a possible alignment problem in the rail system as the cause of the disruption, and deployed some 60 staff to test for alignment on Thursday night after the incident.

However, the exact point at which the alignment was off has not been established yet.

The disruption affected 127,000 passengers, and some 1,000 commuters were also trapped in each of the four trains that stalled.

More than 300 staff who were not working at that time were activated to help commuters.

SMRT acknowledged that the rail network has grown, and hence is more complex. It said this made it difficult for the operator to execute its emergency plans.

SMRT said it will review its standard operating procedures.

SMRT also said it will be working to improve its communication strategies. This includes possibly broadcasting recorded announcements in four languages.

SMRT has also apologised for the "income opportunity" template that was used by SMRT Taxi on Thursday following the train disruption.

It said this was a "very bad mistake", and the right template should have said "service disruption".

Yup,precisely....can't you read that between the lines?

Otherwise what is there to consider?You quit or stay put .She needs to know what her political master wishes are.She was placed in this position for some reason.Obviously not to manage a transport company.Because any dog knows not to hire a retail manager for logistics expertise.I am sure her political masters too now knows she has to go.....but it's their arse that is up for shafting now.Because from her sacking onwards the knitted political fabric becomes loose and the Familee may even loose their grip.It may very well ended up by questioning the very PM on his political ineptness.....you see,it's not that easy.
