Increased frequency of train trips means higher noise level: SMRT

SINGAPORe: In the past three years, SMRT has increased the frequency of its train trips to reduce passenger congestion.

SMRT added 1,600 train trips since 2008. But this has resulted in a higher level of noise, with SMRT receiving complaints from residents in Jurong East and Eunos.

For example, the noise level at Bishan MRT station is around 80 to 85 decibels. This is higher than the National Environment Agency's (NEA) stipulation of 67 decibels.

SMRT said the noise level is partly due to wear and tear of the train wheels and track.

But with the increased trip frequency, the company faces challenges in scheduling maintenance.

For example, "wheel profiling" which was previously done on week days has now been pushed to evenings as well as weekends.

The company has also installed a high-speed camera on their trains to detect defects on the tracks at a faster pace.

SMRT said ensuring their wheels and tracks are well-maintained will help reduce noise levels.

Some experts Channel NewsAsia spoke to also recommended buying new trains or replacing the entire track.

since when SMRT gives a shit about the noise pollution? come on lah, 80 to 85 dB is noisy, but only for a short time. 67 dB, KNN, if they want such low noise solution, why not consider using MagLev! These are noiseless!

The whole point about reducing frequency is REDUCTION of Operational Cost.

The energy required to power up a train is large, I am not sure what are the power level, maybe people work in SMRT can share.

Next, to increase frequency, means to increase staff to man the train (perhaps they do not have enough "Train Drivers")

Increasing staffs means increasing cost.

Since SMRT is operated as a profit generating entity, the cheebye CEO could have hatched this idea of cost reduction via reducing frequency, but the business intake is fixed, as the amount of number of people to take MRT is fixed per day...

If Income remains the same, expenses are reduced, due to reduced frequency, and reduced wear and tear, and reduced maintenance...
