Shivering Bangladeshi, 12 GROs held
Detained...the women from the Philippines who were working as GROs
Twelve Filipino guest relations officers (GROs) were detained in raids on entertainment outlets in Johor Baru Friday night, along with a 30-year-old Bangladeshi who hid inside a water tank for three hours to evade the authorities.
The cold and shivering illegal worker was pulled out of the water tank of a restaurant where he had been working illegally.
Johor Immigration Department enforcement chief Masri Adul said enforcement officers raided an entertainment outlet in Taman Nusa Bestari 2 at 9.30pm on Friday and detained the 12 women aged between 22 and 30 along with a man, in his 30s, who claimed to be their "manager".
"The women had violated their visitor’s pass by working as GROs. We detained manager to get more information about the syndicate which brought them in," he said.
He said officers also raided two restaurants in Taman Anggerik an hour later and detained 18 foreign workers who did not have proper work permits.
"The most shocking sight was the man hiding inside the water tank."
"He was trembling as it was very cold inside the tank," he said adding that illegal workers would resort to almost anything to escape.
Masri said a 50-year old man who owns one of the two restaurants was also detained.
"We will step up operations against all illegal foreign workers. They will be sent to our depot in Pekan Nenas before being deported to their home countries,” he said.
