In a truly democratic country, where there's true separation between the executive (govt), legislative (Parliament) and judiciary (courts), the courts are indeed powerful and independent. A president can be impeached, or a corrupt minister charged, if they're guilty of proscribed offences. However, there are boundaries to its remit — the court can only interpret and prosecute according to the law laid down by Parliament. The court cannot make new laws.

Problem in Singapore isn't about the court's power; it's about the lack of independence of the courts, and executive interference in the court's decisions. This allows the govt to abuse the courts for political ends. The appointment of the PM's personal lawyer as AG is a prime example of such a collusive relationship between govt and judiciary.

Dead fart is a dictator so he wanted the yes men. It makes it easier to rule. But independent judiciary is also a problem. Look at the USA... Trump cannot even get things done because of all these check n balances that has become a political tool. Checks n balances is to reduce corruption...but now it is used to discredit the president so someone else can become president. There is no public service. Just self service n self help.

But another point which needs to be looked at for judicial independence...these judges are not elected...and yet they can. Go against the wishes of the elected representatives...if these judges become self serving power hungry scums...they can cause a lot of problems for the elected representatives.

Well, this is another area that the PAP can get SW. He is obliged for reservist regardless of whether he is downgraded to PES C or whatever. I am sure MINDEF will produce a letter asking him to report for reservist knowing full well that he will not. That will be an additional charge on him for avoiding reservist.

NS has castrated SG guys. Those who have not been castrated during NSF like ShengWu Li will get 2nd chance to be castrated during their reservist.

And I dont understand why some SG guys voted for pap after what PAP has done to them

Then US Judges will be like SG Judges giving rulings like "Inside the centre is not within 200m of the centre" and US President will never lose a case in US Courts.

There is one law that can make u Stateless..

If u leave outside Singapore and hv not return even once to Singapore in last 10 years, your singapore citizenship will be automatically denounced.

U must cone back to Singapore to stay for min 3 months. Then can leave outside Singapore for next 10 years.

You will be Stateless unless u hv applied for citzenship elsewhere.

This law was started in 1986 to stop fugitive Francis Seow Tang Liang Hong and so on from coming back.

See how ruthless bully and tyrant LKY was.

Trump tipped the balance of power in favor of the conservatives with the appointment of Neil Gorsuch.

If Presidents had the right to replace judges they did not like then the judiciary would become beholden to the executive and we all know what happens in such a situation.

can't a lawyer represent him in picking up the renewsed passport?? or is there a requirement that h e signs the 1st page in front of a papig?

I do not mean replace judges as the executive like,,but it should not be like judges having life tenures,,,have mandatory retirement age,,,nomination approved by both houses or termination by both houses etc,,,when ah Yong was chief justice at least there was no light sentences for drug dealers and foreigners unlike now,,so there was good in having dictatorship powers,,though I do not encourage it,

U obviously know nothing about separation of state. If the President can replace Supreme court judges at will if he thinks they are unfair, then where is the separation? Supreme court judges will be beholden to him. If the President wants to pay himself $100 million a year salary, and following the inevitable lawsuit, the judges dismiss this new law in court, will he fire them? After all, the President will argue the judges were unfair because if a Piss ant country like singapore can pay its PeeM $3 million a year, then a big country like the US should have paid its President $100 million. Is this unfair?

I think this law applies to only people who became singaporean citizens and not people who were born here. Usually if such a person is convicted of a crime overseas, the Singapore govt can "disown" him by revoking his citizenship. But not if they are born in singapore. Not too sure about this.
