SINGAPORE - The slight woman stood ramrod straight in the dock, dressed in a black sleeveless frock accessorised with a thin blue belt.

Her hair was a shoulder-length bob and she stood in four-inch-high cream heels. A Rolex watch adorned her left wrist as she kept both hands clasped in front of her, nodding silently as District Judge Shaifuddin Saruwan addressed her.

But her demure looks can be deceiving.

The 29-year-old woman had just pleaded guilty to breaking a Personal Protection Order (PPO) taken out against her by her husband.

Rosie (not her real name) had slapped her husband five times on the left side of his face, causing a tear in his left ear drum.

The couple cannot be named in order to protect the identity of their young daughter.

The court heard on Thursday that on one morning last September, Rosie had gone to visit her daughter at her husband's flat in the east.

An argument started and it quickly turned physical as Rosie hit her husband five times.

Another charge, which was taken into consideration, detailed how she also choked him, bit his left arm and punched his groin area several times on a separate occasion.

When her husband called the police, all he said was: "My wife beat me and I got PPO against her". It is unclear what led to the PPO dated Jan 18 last year.

A medical report from Changi General Hospital showed that Rosie's husband was physically fine except for the tear in his ear drum.

Rosie, who was unrepresented in court, asked for leniency and said she was supporting her child. She added that she hoped to be able to take care of her daughter.

While she does not live with her husband, Rosie said they still see each other every day. It is believed that the two are separated.

Judge Shaifuddin said that he wanted the couple to attend a Community Court Conference (CCC) before her sentencing on Jan 31.

A CCC is held to either mediate between parties, explore treatment or care plans for recalcitrant behaviour or to examine the best sentence for high-profile cases.
