SINGAPORE: Candidates in contested constituencies will be allowed to address their supporters at Nomination Centres once nomination proceedings close.
Previously they were not allowed to do so.
Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam provided further details on the change following amendments to the Parliamentary and Presidential Election Acts.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, he said Nomination Day proceedings will remain largely the same as in previous elections, following the legislative changes which were gazetted in March.
One change though is that candidates can now address supporters at Nomination Centres.
Mr Shanmugam said the change was made in response to feedback following the last elections.
On Nomination Day, candidates will have to abide by the instructions given by the Returning Officer or the Group Assistant Returning Officer (GARO).
There will be conditions attached, such as the length of their address.
Each single-member constituency (SMC) candidate will have up to one minute to give a short address.
Each team of Group Representation Constituency (GRC) candidates can take up to three minutes.
Speakers will be alerted by bell chimes towards the end of their allotted times.
An area outside the nomination hall will be designated for speeches.
There is no need for candidates to make an application for approval to address their supporters at the Nomination Centres.
