SINGAPORE'S unemployment rate fell to its lowest level of 2.1 per cent in December since the first quarter of 2008 when it held at 1.9 per cent, boosted by hirings for the year-end festivities and integrated resorts.

Among the resident labour force, the unemployment rate fell to 3 per cent in the fourth quarter, after hitting 5 per cent in the third quarter and 4.6 per cent in the second quarter, according to latest jobs data released by the Ministry of Manpower on Friday morning.

On average, 87,000 residents were unemployed in 2009, compared with 62,900 the previous year.

Some 38,700 new jobs were added in the last quarter, bringing the total number to 38,800 for the whole year.

Employers fired 1,300 workers in the fourth quarter, and another 200 were released from their contracts early. A total of 22,700 people lost jobs in 2009, the most in eight years.

The bulk of the employment gains in the fourth quarter came from services. Manufacturing employment also rose in the fourth quarter, after four consecutive quarters of declines. But the employment gain of 1,400 in the fourth quarter were not enough to offset earlier losses. For the whole year, manufacturing lost 43,000 jobs.

38,000 job added in Q4
Unemployment fell significantly with strong job creation and fewer layoffs

Hirings for the year-end festivities and the two integrated resorts added 38,700 jobs in the fourth quarter, cutting the overall unemployment rate to 2.1 per cent.

The new jobs created were much higher than the gains of 14,000 in the third quarter and 21,300 in same quarter a year ago, according to the fourth quarter data released by the Ministry of Manpower on Friday morning.

For the whole of 2009, total employment rose by 38,800, as job gains in the second half year more than offset the losses in the first half. The bulk of the employment gains came from services, which added 32,100 workers in the fourth quarter.

After shedding workers for four consecutive quarters, manufacturing employment rose by 1,400 in the fourth quarter. As the gains were not sufficient to offset the earlier losses, the manufacturing sector lost 43,000 jobs in 2009, said MOM.

With the strong employment growth, the seasonally adjusted overall unemployment rate fell to 2.1 per cent in December, from 3.4 per cent in September. Among the resident labour force, the unemployment rate fell to 3 per cent from 5 per cent over the same period. An estimated 60,100 residents were out of work in December. Redundancy fell for the third consecutive quarter. Based on preliminary estimates, 1,300 workers were retrenched and 200 contracts were terminated prematurely, resulting in 1,500 workers made redundant in the fourth quarter. This was substantially lower than the redundancies in the preceding quarter (2,470) and the fourth quarter of 2008 (9,410).

For the whole of last year, 22,700 workers were laid off - higher than the 16,880 in 2008, due to the spike in redundancies in the first quarter due to the economic downturn. Manufacturing formed the bulk of redundancies (59 per cent or 13,400), while services laid off 8,300 workers or 36.6 per cent and construction, 1,000 or 4.4 per cent. Despite the economic contraction, local employment grew by 43,000 in 2009. In contrast, foreign employment fell by 4,200 compared to a record increase of 156,900 in 2008. As at December, there were 1.05 million foreigners forming 35.2 per cent of the 2.99 million workers in Singapore. The majority, comprising 64.8 per cent or 1.94 million, were locals.

For pampered sinkies these are all bad news to them, low unemployment rate, increase of their home values, FW to serve them etc..singapore should go back to the 60s and 70s living standard thats when the PAP got the highest vote

Time for PAP to come out and take the credit.... rightfully or wrongfully???? Any good credit they will be the first to announce and take credit.

Wow so lucky.... work and work till end up, pocket all empty..... :oIo:

These are some Farting figures.

Some summary why I could not agree.

Total working population 2.99 million.

1% - 30,000

Q3 unemployment is all time high 5% - 150,000.
Q4 unemployment drop to 2.1% - 63,000

It first mentioned 38,000 job added in Q4 and went on to summarize

For the whole of 2009, total employment rose by 38,800, as job gains in the second half year more than offset the losses in the first half.

You see the problem. There are more holes in this short report then you can find in any meteors that came down from the sky. Another bloody 154th shit.

More like those unemployeed remained so for onths already and hence been dropped off the statistics as they are considered not in the job market anymore, therefore the number of unemployed dropped .

If you look around the streets, yuo find more and more people roaming the streets during supposely office-hours.

More likely these 60,000 missing from the report drop dead on the street or jump down from HDB.

if u believe the "massaged" statistics put out by the miw, then pigs can fly !!!

as we get nearer and nearer to election date, it is not a surprise to see stats being manipulated to make the ruling party looks good so as to persuade voters to continue voting for them. This is part and parcel of their tactics and a rationale voter should not absorb figures published at face value. Voters should assess their own immediate situation to see if they are better or worse off rather than paying attention to the national statistics. If voters feel that they are worse off compared to 5 years ago, then it is time for them to vote against the current ruling party in order to change for the better. If voter thinks he is better off, then by all means vote for the ruling party. For me and my family, i can only say that we feel that local singaporean are not given enough priority by the ruling party and all of us want to see a change in it so we are voting against the ruling party

there is a pap kindergarden downstairs my block, everytime i see their parent father mostly, picking them up. Looks like they are not working and looking after their kids. I dun trust the figures given by MOM. Looks more like fabricated or unreal.

Figures are accurate. Not sure how they calculate the figures though.

Come on!! data an be easily manipulated or fixed (in LHL word) to look good for election and BUY VOTES. After election, it will magically tilted to look bad again and than PAP will start blaming Singaporeans for everything and anything to justify their unpopular policies again. 40 years of lessons, half a lifetime of miseries under PAP, have we not learned.

Cut was announced like 2 days ago 27th Jan 2010 .
