The man opened a gambling den at home, from gathering with friends to recruiting gamblers to his home. He was open six days a week and made more than 120,000 yuan in two months. As a result, he was raided by the police.
The defendant, Lin Junkai (36 years old, transliteration), faced three charges including violating gambling control and violating the Casino Act. He admitted one of them. The judge took the other two into consideration and sentenced him to six months in prison and a fine of 52,259 yuan.
According to the case, the police raided the defendant's HDB home in Serangoon North at 9:52 pm on December 27, 2023, and seized poker tables, chips and poker cards in the house during the raid.
The defendant set up a gambling game at home at the time, and there were 10 gamblers playing Texas Hold'em at the time of the incident.
The investigation revealed that the defendant had allowed gamblers to play Texas Hold'em at home since mid-September 2023, setting up gambling games at least six times a week. At first, he just invited friends to gamble at his home, and later he invited the public to come to his home in the Telegram group.
In order to "operate", the defendant bought a poker table and about 1,000 poker chips, and charged each gambler a $30 entry fee, and each gambler was also charged a $2 "commission" for each game.
In order to start the game, the defendant also hired three people: a dealer, who was paid $10 per hour; a venue manager, who was responsible for delivering food and pouring water, and was paid $100 per game; an accountant, who calculated the wins and losses of each game, and was paid $150 per game.
According to documents found in the defendant's computer, he earned a total of 122,229 yuan through his home gambling den between October 20 and December 27, 2023, but the defendant said that most of the money was lent out to gamblers, and that he himself was a poor man who didn't profit much from this.
