The 1st record of Spore existence was the mythical Sang Nila Utama, a prince from the ancient 7th to 11th century Sri Vijaya empire, west landmass known today as W. Malaysia, who named this strategic island after a lion. It was the only time it was a swampy land & uninhabited but became a trade outpost for the empire, with most living near the coast & fishing as sustenance.Singapore was a bustling metropolis and trading hub before Raffles claimed it for the Crown. If it was otherwise he would have chosen another landing site.
The next development of Spore was from Prince Parameswara, from the same empire which was on its last legs by the 15th century. He was an adventurer, invited powers of those days - portugal & China, to secure his land claims to the landmass known as the Malaysian Peninsula today
However, Singapore was still undeveloped. Much of activities were concentrated on the southern coastlines near deep water ports, where much of trade wealth were siphoned off back to the powers that were, nothing for Spore.
Inhabitants that moved inland were subsistence farmers even right up to 1965.
