My guess is something like this happened:

NCM wanted to be parachuted into a 'safe' GRC, Guitar Wong refused. Then came the face-saving "I want to win Jalan Kayu on my own merit" bit in the news cycle.

Forget about holding public office, you should avoid cockroaches like NCM in your personal social circles whenever possible.
