SINGAPORE - An off-duty police officer helped nab a man wanted for committing several break-ins at Compassvale.
On Sept 5, a man was in his kitchen when he spotted someone reach for his laptop bag through the main gate of his HDB unit at Compassvale estate.
The victim shouted at the thief and chased after him when he ran off with his laptop bag.
The commotion attracted the attention of an off-duty police officer, Sgt Zhang Xu Kun who lived nearby. Sgt Zhang gave chase along with the victim.
The suspect was eventually detained and the bag, containing the victim's laptop valued at about $2,000, was also recovered.
Investigations revealed that the suspect, aged 46, is believed to be involved in two other similar cases where laptops, mobile phones and valuables worth around $5,000 were stolen.
The suspect will be charged in court on Sept 7 for housebreaking theft by day, which carries a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.
