The public forum on Malay issues organised by the SDP has generated much attention and interest among Singaporeans. The panelists will include a senior PAP member, an educator, and an academic from NUS.

The speakers will weigh in on the topic The future of Singapore – do Malays have a part?

With the current immigration policy, Singaporeans are concerned that the cultural and social identity of Singapore of which our Malay-Muslim community plays an integral part will be eroded.

This is because the mass infusion of individuals of other nationalities threatens the social ethnic mix of Singapore. It seems that the PAP Government has given little thought to how these new immigrants will integrate into the Singaporean society and culture.

The Malay community is suspicious that the PAP is bringing in nationals especially from China and India to reduce the proportion of Malays in this country.

Add to the long-standing policies that discriminate against them, there is increasing resentment among our fellow Malay citizens against the PAP. The long line of PAP Ministers in charge of Muslim affairs, including the current one, Mr Yaacob Ibrahim, has proven to be ineffective in voicing the concerns of the Malay community. The SDP has invited Minister Yaacob to speak at the forum.

This forum will discuss several issues including education and economic progress affecting Singapore Malays – and therefore Singapore – with the view to formulating an SDP alternative policy position on the subject. As mentioned above, helping us with the discussion are:

Mr Abdul Halim
, a former senior civil servant at the Immigration Department of Singapore. Mr Absul Halim is the recipient of several state awards including the BBM and PBM. He has held several positions within the PAP including the secretary of the PAP's Kampong Kembangan Branch and deputy chairman for the PAP Bedok Reservoir-Punggol Branch at the Aljunied GRC (of which he is still a member). He is a founding member of Yayasan Mendaki and has served as Mendaki's assistant secretary-general. Mr Abdul Halim was also chairman of the Malay Activity Executive Committee Coordinating Council of the People’s Association which identifies and recruits Malay grassroots leaders.

Mr Maarof Salleh
has a Masters degree in Southeast Asian Studies and writes regularly on contemporary Malay-Muslim issues. Trained as a teacher, Mr Maarof Salleh served as president of the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS). He was also Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS). He served in various capacities in the University of Singapore Malay Language Society, the Muslim Youth Assembly, the Singapore Malay Teachers' Union and the Yayasan Mendaki.

Mr Walid Jumblat
teaches at the Political Science Department at NUS where he completed a BA (Hon) in Economics. He then did his Masters degree in Political Science from the same university, with his research interests in Singapore politics and state-religion relations.

The other speakers are SDP
Chairman Mr Jufrie Mahmood and Dr Wong Wee Nam, member of the SDP Healthcare Advisory Panel. Dr Vincent Wijeysingha will be the forum moderator.

The SDP has also invited Mr Yaacob Ibrahim,

Is the MOF’s argument similar of Kong Hee of Church saga stating his accused use of church funds was a non issue as no actual monies was taken out. Here stating it was non issue as taken out of MOF operating budget. So Kong Hee and MOF type of argument right and any accounting/audit breach is non issue as taken based on their arguments. So left pocket right pocket then balance books ok, non issue all is ok. Rubbish as breach and non cnference to audit guidelines and laws are wrong and in breach of laws and regulations -need to be censured, investigated and charged.

When the late President Suharto of Indonesia was “overthrown” by the Indonesian uprising against his government, his good friend named Harry Lee commented that “Suharto treated himself as a Sultan of Indonesia and believed that he owns all the wealth of the country”.
In a single breath, the PAP Mentor forgot that in Singapore, he and his PAP LEEdership looked at the Singapore’s Wealth as their own, which entitle them to make decisions exclusively in any manner they see fit – even to give away State Funds without considering the Standing Orders that were put in place by themselves.
To this extent, the PAP LEEdership had dubiously instituted absurd laws that prevent any NEW Government from accessing the Singapore Reserves to spend on new programs – unless the funds are accumulated during their own term of office.
This law is self-serving to the PAP, and is set to obstruct a NEW Government from governing effectively.
Despite the new legislations deliberately created by the PAP to inconvenience a NEW Government formed by an Alternative Party, the PAP will meanwhile circumvent these legislations in any way that can be manipulated by the Civil Service under their instruction.
Clearly, the PAP LEEdership has allowed themselves and their Government to be “ABOVE THE LAW” – as had been seen frequently over the last 20 years, in the dubious re-interpretation of the laws to absolve them of any fault.
Time for Singaporeans to loudly ask the PAP “where is our money ?”

I m really disappointed with this. This is playing racial and religious politics. Somethig that PAP had done and UMNO had done all the time and now SDP is jumping onto the bandwagon just to show they are doing something.

really makes me wonder if SDP is really an opposition party or is now slowly showing its actual pro-PAP shell.

WP is the only party which actually runs a town council and clean their constituencies blocks and dun talk nonsense and bullshit craps like being Xenophoic and vocally Anti FTs?

PAP run town councils and clean constituencies' blocks too. They aren't xenophobic and anti-FT, that's for sure. So that's how you sinkies define "opposition" in Singapore.

yeah plunder the chinese when they are such a small minority. Also what about indians? Indians are increasing. Now it's like every 4th face or even more out of 10 are indians. As usual blame chinese for everything.

SDP going for the Malay vote? They have better chance if they court PKMS! Being sarcastic.

SDP has always targeting English-speaking middle class and going into the Malay vote is out of their league since Malay demographics are not typically English-speaking middle class.

This is not considered a PAP endorsed attendence. Abdul Halim was never a Senior Government Servant. He was just a Div 1 Immigration Officer. When the Malay Professionals revolted during GCT tenure, the agreement that was negotiated in the main is that the Malays professionals will have say in selection of MPs, party political officer. It is more a franchise agreement than individual members joining the party.

The only possible reasons the Malay "leadership" is allowing this is 2 fold - (1) show the PAP that they can wag their own tails and (2) they are seeking a platform to create a profile. The fact that their high profile member defected to PAP seems to make this even more intriguing.

I won't be surprised that he tells people attending that he came as a rep of one the Malay group that he leads or involved in.

SDP should not have bothered.

I think SDP is walking on sensitive grounds organising this. Do you think the gathering will be aborted?

what's so sensitive? not mixing race and politics what. sdp wasting their time here tho as they have no credentials to win malay ground. malays know that however cock pap is, pap treats them the best. wp, nsp are all chinese towkay and uncle parties, with chinese majority interests - which is correct what as democracy is about the majority.

I don't think it is sensitive. NSP did it with their Malay Bureau. If it is cancelled it will be because it has been hyped by SDP as PAP participating. I won't be surprised that PAP makes an announcement that Halim is not representing the PAP.
