Woodlands dormitory for SMRT drivers

SMRT dormitory rooms' housekeeping "below par" but not over-crowded: MOM

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in a statement on Thursday that SMRT dormitory rooms were within allowed occupancy limits but had "below par" housekeeping conditions. MOM revealed in the statement that its Housing Enforcement Branch officers visited the SMRT dormitory rooms where its China bus drivers are housed on Wednesday.

The ministry said the dormitory rooms were not overcrowded as they were within allowed occupancy limits. "within recommended by MOM"

Its officers also found bed bug problems in some of the rooms occupied by the SMRT drivers, adding that "occupants of each room are responsible for their own hygiene". "they are filthy"

MOM also said its officers observed that rooms occupied by the SMRT drivers had "below par" general housekeeping conditions compared to other rooms in the dormitories. ( see above)

They also noted that that many SMRT drivers had problems with room allocation; drivers on different shifts were placed in the same room, making it difficult for them to get a good rest.

The ministry said it shared the findings of the inspection with SMRT management on Thursday, and that the transport operator has indicated it would improve the bus drivers' living conditions as soon as possible. "they should house them individually in Shangri-la or St.Regis, where they can have a good night sleep"

MOM said it has reiterated to SMRT that labour and contractual grievances raised by the workers should be a priority and addressed quickly.
It also called on SMRT to work more closely with the union to resolve outstanding issues. Separately, SMRT held its first townhall session with its drivers from China on Thursday morning.

There was another session on Thursday afternoon. The transport operator told its drivers at the sessions that it has set up a 24-hour hotline for drivers to call if they have concerns or grievances.

They have also appointed liaison officers who can speak Mandarin to deal directly with the drivers, said SMRT. "you mean in the past, they were speaking English to them, poor things" "no comprendo"?

Drivers can approach these liaison officers in addition to their supervisors. SMRT also assured its drivers that it would continue to work closely with dormitory operators to ensure dormitories are kept in good condition.

The transport operator also announced that it will arrange alternative accommodation for the drivers at various HDB flats located island-wide when the leases of their dormitories expire from early 2013. "no wonder our property tax is going up, these Ah Tiongs will be living next to you, please embrace & integrate them"

This is in response to a large number of drivers expressing their desire to move out from their dormitories. "how about Shangri-La or St.Regis??"

Channel NewsAsia understands that 400 bus drivers attended the townhall sessions.

SMRT said in a statement that it would continue to ensure their bus services operate normally, and that there are 45 bus drivers from SBS Transit and private operators on standby ready to be deployed to assist SMRT. "why we place oursleves at the mercy of foreigners, in essential transport system, which could cripple the country economy & a danger to our lives, our love ones, who use the public system daily, who is responsible"?

How come Mediacorp talk and talk about housing conditions but cant show us pictures or videos?

You won't want to see how the Ah Tiong's room look like, some of them is so 'clean' that those Swine living in sty have better House Keeping. I am sure you won't want to see..it is not the purpose built dormitory is sub standard, it is the occupants that are. The dorimitory rooms have been fumigated & clean & painted, way before these people occupy, the vermins come later. It is the people who bring in the bed bugs, the cockroaches, the ants & the food bits, that attracts them, & then come mice & soon enough rats. So, who are the VERMIN?? the 'pot calling the kettle black".

Woodland dormitory is not haphazardly built, in the past, we can say, we have dormitories that are squalid & unfit for human occupancy, more for cattles & sheep. The minister of Manpower have personally raided them before, have we not forgotten from press reports?? This dormitory in woodlands is built to specification approved by MOM, SCDF & URA & NEA &.....

The China men, when arrive here would have been briefed about the housing, & I am sure given orientation tour of the rooms & even given choices whicj room to choose & whom they want to SLEEP with, this I am sure, which management won't do that?

There are even transport arrangement to take them from the dormitory to where their depot are. I am not supporting SMRT, the managment would have done more than enough to cater for these China men...what more do they want? people to hold their hands? or domestic helpers from China to clean their rooms, make their bed & cook & serve them meals..& get paid $x,xxx a month...& air condition the room too.

Oh yes!, they need good sleep, so individual room, with wake up service & room service too.

So, what are they complaining about?? too little pay? too many in a room?, life is unfair? then we all are in this situation too? for the MIW's had been unfair to use too?? what to! what do you thinks??:p

That was a poorly conceived reason on their part. Not enough rest? No buses run from 1am to 5am, they have at least 4 hours of uninterrupted rest if the morning shift bloke and the last bus bloke share the same room.

Limpeh last time do guard duty, only got one bunk. Every two hours details walk in and out of the room also like that. NSF pay lower some more. Got strike or not? Chey!

You wouldn't want to see. Do you know that they wear their shoes in their own rooms?

Yes! and those in the construction industry, will bring in their muddy gears in too....& hang their washings in the bed railings....even when they are told not to, they ignore.. it was common for them to walk around the dormitory & even the surrounding area in their underwear..and they tell you, "in China, this is common"...we ought to have a balance view on this...today China man..tomorrow!!

You will not believe what I encountered previously, about some years ago. I need to rent a unit at Pandan Valley and an agent brought me to a unit with PRC tenants - not a family, but about 5 or 6 of them. Tell you what shock you. Yes, wear shoes and slippers in the whole house and the bathrooms are thick with shit and the floor is like a wet market floor and you know what, they seem to be very at ease and the filth did not seem to bother them at all. SHOCKING!!

They love to hang around & drink till they are pissed & especially if it is a weekend & often you will find them in the drains..

What do they want? salary of $2,500 per month, individual room with house keeping service & wake up calls, meals cooked & prepared, room fully furnish with air conditioning & entertainment system, limousine service from & to work...management to call them "sirs or madams"..

Life is unfair...then, shouldn't leave China..it is better back home...why get bullied elsewhere?

HDB too lowly for them, why not build & design a Condominium especially to house foreign workers...and make SINgapore the best in this world that look after the workers of the world..everybody "kee chiu"!! purpose built dormitory is passe!

Tiongs are unhygienic. Perhaps they need personal hygiene training.

We should instill military discipline upon the new recruits. Transfer an RSM to supervise area cleaning every morning and conduct stand-by-bed every evening. To make sure they all keep fit and not fall sick so easily, there will be 5BX every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

This statement reflects the years of Govt. playing both the regulatory body and being involved in commerce at the same time.

For example, MAS is only a facilitator, not a regulator.
Meaning: You stoopid retail investors, you die your own business
