Communist China had lie to her citizens.They promise democracy, voting but after they overthrow Nationlist blaming them for being dictator of China,and when they came to power, they became the dicator of China.

They blame Nationlist for being corrupted and now they are more corrupted then Nationlist.(And during that time, Nationlist China was still recovering from 2nd World War.. understanding that corruption might be there.But now Communist China is far from war torn.They got more time and money to deal with corruption then the War torn Nationlist.)

The Communist proudly told her citizens Communist is good.Is better than the evil capitalist economy.(Remember at that time Nationlist China was practising western capitalist economy.)And after Communist came to power, their economy became worst then what Nationlist economy.And Mao start to implement alot of funny method like getting all the citizens to bring all kind of metal to melt.Kind of lame and stupid.Show that Mao is a stupid bloody bastard.)They are backward in economy, far more than Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea at that time.

So in the end, Deng open free trade to open her economy to the world.Soo, they are doing what the Nationlist are doing last time.That is practising western capitalist.And Hong Kong was their main channel for the success.If not for Hong Kong, Guang Dong and Shanghai will not be that success.And Hong Kong was a capitalist freedom city under the British.
