Security labels for bicycles to deter theft

SINGAPORE: The number of bicycles stolen in the first half of this year has risen by more than 40 per cent, compared to the same period last year.
454 bicycles were reported stolen from January to June this year, while the first half of 2010 saw 318 reported stolen.
In response, authorities have released security labels for bicycles.
These labels are weather-resistant, and will help police identify the owners of recovered bicycles.
The police have been handing the labels to bicycle owners and recording their particulars since June this year.
Three out of five owners interviewed said they had previously lost their bicycles to thieves, while others said they knew of people whose bicycles had been stolen.
A bicycle owner said: "We will be able to find the bicycles when they are lost. I think these measures are not bad, because I'd lost a bicycle before. I hope everyone will use these labels, so bicycle thieves will think twice before they act."
Another shared similar sentiment: "The first bicycle I bought was stolen, and the second, a cheaper one, was also stolen. So I think it'll be better with this label. People won't dare to take them away when they see it."
