I always thought that Harry Truman was such a decent guy. Never expected him to be called a racist, especially to Asians. Moral of the story is that it is possible for a politician to be racist and for people to not know about it. The other way to look at it is that SDP is the most improved party at the 2011 general elections. In 2006 they were polling in the 20s. Now they could get almost 40% in a GRC. At this rate by 2016 they would be winning landslides.

national opposition pool of 39.9%. Which is to say, about 3.2% of typical opposition voters were turn-off enough to
vote PAP instead.

SPP and NSP being a more moderate and progressive opposition parties did very well and garnered 41.4% and 39.2%
respectively of the opposition votes.

I dreaded to imagine a 3-corner fight between SDP, WP and incumbent PAP. SDP will be mauled!

Since the performance of SDP in 2006 and 2011 are so wildly inconsistent, there is no actual way to tell how well the SDP is doing now. If they were to contest, it's extremely hard to tell.

In fact, I would say that the only real way to tell is to participate and see what happens. Which is what they're going to do.

The effects of this move have already been felt. The PAP has already given quite a bit of exposure of its candidate while the Opposition parties are still deciding whether to contest. If I may say, only WP seems to be ready. As the incumbent opposition, they have decided very early on to contest. SDP seems ready to throw in the towel, otherwise why demand a negotiation at this late stage. Don't think they are ready in terms of funding and logistics.

The question that many people here are asking is "What does SDP intend to do?"

The answer is that most probably even the SDP doesn't know, so no point speculating.

The evidence is that they collected 3 forms. The only reason why you collect 3 forms without sending 3 candidates is so that you can get 3 people to fill them out, and then later on decide whose to turn in.

It looks like nearly everyone are taking the bet - that SDP will contest.

I still think that better ones within SDP will guide the less than sensible ones. This is not about principles or the right to contest, it is also about the impact from voters and the general populace if the contest occurs. We have to bear in mind that SDP poll badly over many GEs until the last one. Despite all the noise, even smaller parties and lesser known opposition identities outdid SDP.

If they contest, there is no doubt that they will trail behind WP. How badly they perform will depend on candidates that are offered by both parties.

It depends on whether the sensible folks in SDP can persuade those not-so-sensible ones not to go ahead.

SDP has seen a surge in members, and it is not wise to waste these resources to fight this by-election and giving PAP a chance to win. WP has already stood in the last election with a sizeable vote and voters are familiar with them. Rightly speaking, it should let WP take the lead.

Desmond is just as hopeless - it is kindness even to mention him here. He should step out of the political arena for good unless he wants to contribute gaiety to the scene.

SDP has good folks, and what a waste to have them depicted in the politically naive way like CSJ. Every 4 years come a long way, and do not waste your time to bring down your reputation again, CSJ. SDP has been politically destroyed because of you. I have some glimpses of hope recently and old habits die hard, and I am more convinced once again that history will repeat itself. After the release of the letter to LTK by CSJ containing the threat, the dye has been cast. The attempt to blackmail LTK would not go down well with voters. SDP has now painted itself in a corner.

Even if all the SDP members and supporters including the CEC are keen to field an SP candidate, knowing enough of VW, TSL, Ang or PT. I am certain that all 4 of them are sensible enough not to damage SDP or the opposition cause any further. Thats leave a bare cupboard where quality professionals are concerned. That leaves the political charlatan who has issues with submission of forms not once but twice and also the part time prostitute both of whom are not worth much in terms of votes.

Common sense will prevail. SDP should aim for 2016 and work the ground.

Another WP IB trying to manage opinions. No threat had been cast, CSJ only request WP to meet and negotiate. SDP will not withdraw. You should have seen the email Slyvia sent to SDP. As long as WP refusing to work with other oppositions, this BE and 2016 will backfire on them and they will lose votes.

Of course there are merits to 3CF and the better party will emerge victorious.
