SCR*WED BY 3 CAREER OFFICERS IN ONE DAY
Years back, after just ROD, the active unit that I was posted to had a recall manning.
They did not managed to contact me then as I have shifted house. Back in those days, mobile phones were expensive.
The unit S1 called my office and asked me to go back to Unit as the CO wants to TALK to me.
Asked me to turn up in uniform. I naively did.
IMAGINE my HORROR, when I REACH the CAMP and WITHOUT WAITING FOR ANY EXPLANATION, they MARCHED ME to the S4, HQ BC and PUT ME ON CHARGE for GOING AWOL.
I TRIED TO EXPLAIN that I was not AWARE as I have shifted house, but the S4 did not bother.
Then I was MARCHED to CO office. While there, I overheard the CO saying that some COOKs did not turn up for the RECALL. He needs to COVER UP! And he also NEEDED to FIND A SCAPEGOAT. Because, I was a RESERVIST, I was EASY PREY.
Without, listening to my explanations, he insisted with a SMIRK that he will MAKE SURE I have a BLACK MARK on My RECORD. Such POWER, did he have.
HE DID NOT BOTHER to CHECK MY ACTIVE STATUS.
I WAS AN NCO, Appointment BSM during my NS. But they did not bother.
After being put on charge, I was fined $75, which I was unable to pay as I did not bring much money then. Fortunately, I was able to arrange for the escort to pick up the money from a friend in Mindef. Only, then was I allowed to leave camp.
And the IRONY of it was when I CHECKED MY GREEN RESERVIST BOOK, It STATED CLEARLY THAT I HAD INFORMED THAT OF MY CHANGE OF ADDRESS BEFORE THE RECALL MANNING.
I was UNABLE TO HAVE ANY REDRESS.
Once, I happened to watch a ARMY commercial whereby the CO was quoted as saying he looked after his men. I LAUGHED to myself, as more likely he LOOKED after HIS OWN BACKSIDE.
But thank goodness, I have only seen the commercial ONCE. Maybe he did SCR*WED others too and they complained and the commercial was withdrawn.
So, was it just my luck to be SCR*WED by 3 CAREER OFFICERS in 1 DAY?
OFFICERS who are supposed to be LEADERS and GENTLEMEN?
I Have COMPLETED MY NS. GOT PROMOTED and EVEN received a few Community Service AWARDS.
With 3 such officers in just 1 small battalion; betraying enlisted men they supposed to care for, you wonder how many more of such officers are there in the army, navy and air force.
So, it is indeed frigthening that we are having more ex-career army men going to run for election as our MPs.
