yes, they were left behind, but because we grew too fast, if we remain a poor fishervillage, they will not be left behind and will be happy.
so should we start taking down the sky scraper, burn the car, it will give the poor much warm.
or we can increase social welfare to european standard, then we will have millions of people coming here for asylum, with constant flow of asylum, can we take it too?

Good of you Nice Gook but I have to say I've witnessed too many cases to recall of Singaporeons passing a $2 note to destitute. We do have a fair amount of compassionate people in Singapore despite the disgusting behaviour we sometimes exhibit.

Was in this Koiptiam in an upmarket mall.A dignified Chinese elderly lady was walking around with a bowl of plain rice.She looked at me and my plate of finished meal.Next to my table were foreign career ladies,Some ah nehs and some Peony tucking happily and chatting away.The elderly lady looked around holding her bowl of plain rice and crossed my table to the one behind where some local couple were eating.All she wanted was some sauce poured into her plain rice.The local couple obliged.I was helpless unable to put some food into her bowl as I had finished mine.

I sat there feeling guilty.I walked around looking for her.There she was sitting in a corner table tucking her plain rice all by herself.I walked passed her and slipped some cash into her hand.She grabbed it as if she had not seen cash for a long time.I could not bear to see her in the eye and walked briskly away.Neither she uttered a word.

This is the sate Leegime had turned sinkie into.Foreigners eating whereas local starving.While this gahman gamble billions away and claims it as another honest mistake.

Bless you. Your kind deeds tell me there are still some Singaporeans who care and who are not blind. I feel inspired to do the same. I hope you have a great weekend ahead.

hmm..i wonder how did the europeans managed that..

i always thought....if the govt. is rich, the people will be poor..

if the govt. is poor, the people will be rich...tioh boh?

why would you like a govt. to be rich, when they are so stupid enough to throw 280 billions away within a few months?

<style></style>Actually I too had passed by emotionless many a times away from people asking for alms.Than the nagging guilt feeling sets in.Did I neglect a fellow human.Than its all forgotten.We are human aren't we?

Than there was a time I passed by an old Indian man looking at me and just raising his arm a little; to or not to written in his face.I impulsively put my hand into my shirt pocket and it was all $10 notes.And I continued walking than I sort of felt the man's disappointment in agony.I digged into my pants pockets and took all the coins,walked backwards and dumped into his hands.Giving can be joyful too ...No I am not mad..

Deuteronomy 15:7-11 (New International Version)

7 If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. 8 Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: "The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near," so that you do not show ill will toward your needy brother and give him nothing. He may then appeal to the LORD against you, and you will be found guilty of sin. 10 Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.

Psalm 37:21-40 (New International Version)

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;

22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land,
but those he curses will be cut off.

23 If the LORD delights in a man's way,
he makes his steps firm;

24 though he stumble, he will not fall,
for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.

26 They are always generous and lend freely;
their children will be blessed.

27 Turn from evil and do good;
then you will dwell in the land forever.

28 For the LORD loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.
They will be protected forever,
but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;

29 the righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks what is just.

31 The law of his God is in his heart;
his feet do not slip.

32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
seeking their very lives;

33 but the LORD will not leave them in their power
or let them be condemned when brought to trial.

34 Wait for the LORD
and keep his way.
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing like a green tree in its native soil,

36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
though I looked for him, he could not be found.

37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright;
there is a future [a] for the man of peace.

38 But all sinners will be destroyed;
the future of the wicked will be cut off.

39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

40 The LORD helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

<style></style>Bro logically god does not exist.but there is no logic for human to be humane too..Myself have more respect for service to human than service to god..If we can reach divinity from service to human than I am for it.But most religion places god over human.

saw at roadside restaurants in Bangkok years ago particularly near the boxing stadium, dunnoe whether still happen today, a group of people about 20, men, women, young, old hanging outside, the moment you finished your meal and stood up they would rush in and grabbed whatever left on the plates

some diners would just order extra food and left behind for the group

<style></style>If you see your brother standing by the road
With a heavy load from the seeds he's sowed
And if you see your sister falling by the way
Just stop and stay you're going the wrong way

You got to try a little kindness
Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

Don't walk around the down and out
Lend a helping hand instead of doubt
And the kindness that you show every day
Will help someone along their way

You got to try a little kindness
Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

You got to try a little kindness

<style></style>Yes bro that crossed my mind too.I used to think like that.Buy a meal instead of giving cash to avoid taken for a ride.But this scene took me totally by surprise.She had dignity written all over her face.I do want to humble her by making a scene.Its lunch time and everyone's eyes would be on both of us.That's why I quietly slipped the cash and walked away quickly.Perhaps I am self fish.Everyone becomes old someday.The thought me in her shoes someday scares the shit out of me.Perhaps I am just buying some brownie points for karma sake.

You can order coffee and than choose to sit at her table and slowly chat with her before passing some money to her without any kapo around. Give her $10 to last at least few days of meal.

<style></style>Bro that is the last thing I will do.Chat the disadvantaged and disillusionsised up.Why?Have you ever been to an old folks home and talked to any lonely people there.If you have than you would know what I meant.Their stories can bleed your heart..You would than feel so helpless.And what can we do except to offer that little bit of gesture of acknowledgement that they are indeed are a living people and are not chattels to be thrown away at an expiry date.Just reach out and touch whenever time permits.That will do.And you wouldn't know how greatly that is appreciated...Its not even the little money or food that I could give but acknowledging them even with a nod gives them much happiness.

I do agree I could have gone that extra inch and made her day.But I was simply not ready to bear that load at the moment.

Naivete. Not necessarily so.

In western europe, more socialist. With social security net, but financed by both high direct and indirect taxes (somebody's got to pick up the tab). Income taxes high 40-50%, with VAT in double digits. And wage bands (eg between manager and plumber) are narrow, compared with these parts.

Compared with some parts eastern europe, both sets chenghu and populace also poor.
