BEIJING: China on Sunday (Jan 5) said a mysterious viral pneumonia outbreak that has affected 59 people was not the flu-like virus SARS that killed hundreds more than a decade ago.
The infection was first reported last week in Wuhan, a central Chinese city with a population of over 11 million - leading to online speculation about a resurgence of the highly contagious SARS virus.
"We have excluded several hypotheses, in particular the fact that it is a flu, an avian flu, an adenovirus, respiratory syndrome severe acute (SARS) or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)," the Wuhan health commission said.

Wuhan police on Wednesday said they had punished eight people for "publishing or forwarding false information on the internet without verification."
The health commission said that seven of the 59 patients are seriously ill but that none have died. All are being treated in quarantine.
The infection broke out between Dec 12 and Dec 29, with some of the patients employed at a seafood market in the city that has since been closed for disinfection.
No obvious evidence of human-to-human transmission has been found so far, it added.
"The reported link to a wholesale fish and live animal market could indicate an exposure link to animals," the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Sunday.
The symptoms reported in patients were mainly fever, with a few patients having difficulty in breathing and chest radiographs showing invasive lesions on both lungs.
"The symptoms reported among the patients are common to several respiratory diseases, and pneumonia is common in the winter season," said the WHO, adding that the concentration of cases should be handled "prudently".
It said it was against imposing any travel or trade restrictions on China.
SARS killed 349 people in mainland China and another 299 in Hong Kong in 2003.
The virus, which infected more than 8,000 people around the world, is believed to have originated in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, according to WHO.
WHO criticised China for under-reporting the number of cases following the outbreak.
China sacked its then health minister Zhang Wenkang for the poor handling of the crisis, several months after the first case was reported.
WHO announced that China was free of SARS in May 2004.

Tests show Chinese girl warded with pneumonia, Wuhan travel history not linked to outbreak in China: MOH
As Singapore's first suspected case of the Wuhan pneumonia virus turned out to be a false alarm, an infectious diseases expert tells CNA there is currently no vaccine against the little known strain and that it would take at least three to four years to develop one.

SINGAPORE: The Chinese girl with pneumonia and a travel history to Wuhan who was warded in Singapore and isolated as a precautionary measure has a common childhood viral illness, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in an update on Sunday (Jan 5).
"Epidemiological investigations, clinical assessment and laboratory test results from the suspect case ... showed that the case is not linked to the pneumonia cluster in Wuhan," said MOH in a statement.
MOH had said on Saturday that the three-year-old girl had been warded for further assessment and treatment, and isolated as a precautionary measure.
While she had a travel history to Wuhan - where there has been an outbreak of pneumonia - she had not visited the Huanan seafood wholesale market in Wuhan associated with the cluster of cases, MOH had said on Saturday.

In its update on Sunday, MOH said that the girl has also tested negative for SARS and MERS-CoV.
"The cause of her pneumonia is respiratory syncytial virus, a common cause for childhood respiratory infection," said MOH.
There have been no new suspects as of 3pm on Sunday, said the ministry, adding that this could change amid increased vigilance.
"As medical practitioners are on the lookout for cases with pneumonia who have recently returned from Wuhan, Singapore is likely to see more suspect cases that will need to be investigated for possible links to the Wuhan cluster. MOH will continue to monitor the situation closely," it said.
It has urged the public to remain vigilant and adopt good personal hygiene practices.
Those with a travel history to Wuhan should monitor their health closely and seek prompt medical attention if they feel unwell, and inform their doctor of their travel history, it said.
The first infection in Wuhan was reported on Dec 31 and the number of reported cases has now risen 59.

LONDON: A cluster of more than 50 pneumonia cases in the central Chinese city of Wuhan may be due to a newly emerging member of the family of viruses that caused the deadly SARS and MERS outbreaks, World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Wednesday (Jan 8).
While the United Nations health agency said it needed more comprehensive information to confirm precisely the type of pathogen causing the infections, it said a new coronavirus was a possibility.
But on Thursday, Chinese state television was more conclusive, citing pathogen test results from a preliminary assessment expert group.
"As of Jan 7, 2020, the laboratory detected a new type of coronavirus," China Central Television (CCTV) said in a report. "The new coronavirus that caused this epidemic situation is different from previously discovered human coronaviruses, and further understanding of the virus requires more scientific research."

The CCTV report did not identify the laboratory or the expert group.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause infections ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Some of the virus types cause less severe disease, while some - like the one that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) - are far more severe.
"The initial information about the cases of pneumonia in Wuhan ... pointed to a coronavirus as a possible pathogen causing this cluster," the WHO said in a statement.
It added that since Chinese authorities have conducted laboratory tests and eliminated the SARS coronavirus and the MERS one as possible causes, as well as flu, bird flu, adenovirus and other common respiratory pathogens, "therefore, a novel coronavirus could not be ruled out".

BEIJING: One person has died from pneumonia in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in an outbreak of a previously unknown virus, the Wuhan health authorities said on Saturday (Jan 11).
China's official Xinhua news agency said on Thursday that preliminary lab results conducted by a team of experts showed the pathogen was a new type of coronavirus.

The pneumonia outbreak started last month, and 59 cases had been reported by Chinese authorities by Sunday.
