I'm under no illusions that a new government will be better or that they will automatically decrease their pay.You are making the assumption that voting differently will change the situation. Many of those who left think it is fallible to make such an assumption. Let's take a simple issue. Has any of those intending to run for office announced their intention to cut the salaries of ministers if they form the government? This simple test will tell you heaps about what kind of changes you can expect. Only naive people will believe that voting will make a difference to their lives. To quote Mao, power comes from the barrel of a gun.
In fact, I don't know whether they will be better or worse, but I'm actually quite confident that they will not decrease their pay.
What I know is this.
When you vote out a significant number of the ruling party mps or even vote out enough of them such that the ruling party is changed, those who have been voted out will certainly ask "why?" Those mps who were not voted out would also ask "why?" The new mps voted in may not know or care why, but they will certainly be wary that if they don't work for the voters, they will be the ones being voted out the next time.
This will make all the elected mps, including the members of the cabinet, humble and respectful towards the voters, as they know that the voters determine their careers.
Not like the current situation whereby the elected mps, including the members of the cabinet, think that their superiors determine their careers.
