<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A PSYCHIATRIC condition could save a Russian woman jail time for slashing her Singaporean husband with a kitchen knife last November. Alexandra Chan, 28, had pleaded guilty in June. On Monday, her sentencing was adjourned to Oct 6 for social workers to gauge her suitability for probation.

A Community Court heard that Chan, a part-time yoga instructor, was suffering from depression and required treatment. On the morning of Nov 22, she had a quarrel with her husband, Mr Tang Sin Tong, 39, over her refusal to go on a holiday cruise with him. The businessman left the apartment at the Linear Condominium in Upper Bukit Timah Road and returned at about 4pm.

About two hours later, Chan knocked on the master bedroom door and told her husband to unlock it as she wanted to take some of her belongings. When she got in, she suddenly started slashing him with the kitchen knife. He tried to block the knife but sustained cuts on his right hand and right knee. For the offence, the mother of two daughters aged four and nine, could be fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed for up to two years.

A RUSSIAN-BORN woman who slashed her husband on the hand and knee cap was jailed for one day and fined $5,000 on Wednesday. Alexandra Chan, 28, who is five months pregnant, had pleaded guilty earlier to causing hurt to Mr Tang Sin Tong, 40, a car trader, at a condominium in Upper Bukit Timah Road on Nov 22 last year.

A Community Court was told that the couple had an argument that day over her refusal to go on a cruise with him. Mr Tang left home and returned later that day to take his shower and nap. At about 6pm, Chan, then a part-time yoga instructor, told her husband to open the door and she attacked him with a knife. Mr Tong suffered cuts on his hand and knee when he tried to block the knife.

Mr Sunil Sudheesan said his client, who was suffering from a major depressive disorder, had committed the offence on impulse in a state of heightened emotions. She was quite drunk at the time. He said the injuries were not severe, and that her husband had forgiven her. She could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000.
