"Mine is a very matter-of-fact approach to the problem. If you can select a population and they're educated and they're properly brought up, then you don't have to use too much of the stick because they would already have been trained. It's like with dogs. You train it in a proper way from small. It will know that it's got to leave, go outside to pee and to defecate. No, we are not that kind of society. We had to train adult dogs who even today deliberately urinate in the lifts." - Lee Kuan Yew on Singapore society, The Man & His Ideas, 1997.

"When I call a man openly, you're a liar, you're dishonest, and you do not dare to sue me, there's something basically wrong. - MM Lee Kuan Yew on James Gomez, Channelnewsasia, May 2006

That statement is correct especially if the two parties are equal in power, resources and influence and the case is held in a legally-independent jurisdiction

However in the case of James Gomez, there are additional facts which made the above conditions unneccessary.

Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15th_Singapore_general_election

Controversy arose during the election surrounding the application for a minority-race candidate certificate by James Gomez of Workers' Party.

On the 24 April, Gomez went to the Elections Department to fill up the minority-race candidate certificate application form accompanied by the chairperson Sylvia Lim.

Instead of handing in the application form to election official, Gomez slipped the form in his bag and went off for an interview. At the time, Sylvia Lim had gone to a waiting area and did not witness the event.

On the eve of Nomination Day, James Gomez went to collect his minority-race candidate certificate claiming he had submitted the application form.

After failing to get the certificate, Gomez warned an elections officer of the "consequences".

At 1pm that day, an Elections Department staff called Gomez and told him that he did not submit the Indian and minority candidate certificate form.

During the call, which was recorded, Gomez changed his story and said that he would get back to them. When the media asked him about the issue, Gomez initially refused to discuss about the issue, but later conceded.[55]

Following two days of dispute between both sides, the Elections Department was able to produce video evidence showing that James Gomez did not submit the application form;

a day later, James Gomez apologised to the Elections Department at a Worker's Party rally saying he was distracted by his busy schedule.[56]

During the controversy, PAP raised questions about the credibility of Gomez. He was accused of attempting to discredit the Elections Department by claiming they misplaced the form. Two PAP leaders Wong Kan Seng and Lee Kuan Yew called Gomez a "liar" and Lee dared Gomez to sue him and Wong.[16] George Yeo (PAP) also suggested that the Worker's Party should sack Gomez and field a four-member team for the five-member Group Representation Constituency. This was rejected by Low who asserted that PAP was trying to divert public and media attention from main election issues.[57]
Thus in making that statement, MM Lee is not wrong. The context is one of discrediting others for his own mistake.

The question was why James Gomez changed his tune only after video evidence was presented.

And the video evidence, taped conversation and James Gomez own admission indicate that MM Lee had ample justification to call James Gomez 'a liar'.

Singapore is successful becos of his idealogy ........!

But SIngapore is going down becos of his idealogy ! Because he has seriously crippled the alternative voice and opinion !

Yes , he has done great in the past , we are grateful for him and the 1st generation Minister. Time for a change , i don know how painful will the change be. But in order for Singapore to transform to a greater height, we need a change.

i don't know whether singapore success is because of his ideology. or bunch of dedicated people. some of which ganna screw by him, betray by him later on. i don't know. i have to do research, read more on it.

but i do find that many of the current screw up situation, the screw up policy, the screw up political climate, the screw up attitude of the masses, could be trace back to his thinkings, his philosophies, his meme.

for example. he stress a lot a lot on academic achievement, he equate academic achievement to capability, intelligence etc. and thus the paper chase of this country, lots of money lots of energy pour into getting a cert, whether from the public education institution or private instituion or oversea. but then, its a blind spot of his. academic achievement is not guarantee for capability.

okay, maybe u disagree with my example. doesn't matter. its just an example. maybe u or other forum member could come up with a better one.

what i am trying to say is singapore problem, the root cause of it is from this man thinking. because LKY is THE most influential person in this country. most important man in PAP. and PAP is the most powerful here in this country.

his ideas get translated into policies and implement swiftly. his ideas get repeated exposure in the mass media. his mannerism, his attitude, his speeches, his ideas, get spread around in this country like virus real fast. so whatever problem we have now, most of it, we could trace it back to this man.

in order to tackle singapore problem, close scrutiny, close examination, deconstruction on Lee Kuan Yew's thinking, philosophies, meme is a must.

first identify the important meme/ thinkings of his. next, we should be able to link all kind of fuck up policies to his thinkings, meme of his.

fuck up Lee Kuan Yew's meme (leads to) => fuck up policies (leads to) => fuck up result, problems, etc.

and after we do that, show the link for each parts, even we are PAP apologists, we couldn't bring ourselves to believe in his philosophies, his 'teachings', his ideologies. and that, is a very important first step. to debunk Lee Kuan Yew myopic thinkings, debunk Lee Kuan Yew flawed ideology flawed philosophies in order for Singapore to change for the better.

Problem is... even he retired, his meme/ mind virus, his thinkings are still spreading. And lots of Singaporeans love his shit.

So not only he should retire, his screwed up thinkings, those mind virus of his, those meme, should be 'retired' too.

And that needs collective efforts to debunk his meme. To rid of the virus.

Maybe someone will say, how can we put root cause of the problem onto this man? There are many other factors isn't it?

No. Listen. Suppose a country has got two or more poweful political parties, the local mass media is independent and powerful, the interest groups are pretty influential too, etc etc. Lots of forces in the country at work. In that case, we cant put all the blame, most problem of the country to one person, one political party.

But Singapore is different. Our political power, most of it go to Lee Kuan Yew and PAP. They have consolidated most power here in this country. The local mass media is also under their control. Opposition almost squeezed out of breath. And Lee Kuan Yew is PAP, and the PAP is Lee Kuan Yew.

In this case, we could place most of the problem, problems which are result of failed policies, inefficiency of the govt, onto the man in charge. Which is the most powerful man on this island state, which is no one else but Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He is responsible for most problem in Singapore.

He is the root cause of the problem of Singapore.

Actually why fixate on LKY when he is 86? Why not focus on LHL and those around him instead?

In any event, at the present moment there is no way to kick out the PAPs from government unless you wish to see possible severe instability and uncertainty which is no one's best interests. What would be better is to clip PAPs wings to say 60% or les of the vote and a fall of 1 or 2 GRCs. And then let a generally serious minded credible oppo grow and take off from there.

No. Right now, the problem is not about having or not having balls to kick LKY. Right now, problem is most Sporeans find LKY meme AGREEABLE. THEY FIND LKY AND HIS THINKINGS, ARGREEABLE. THATS THE PROBLEM.

If Sporeans find LKY and his thinkings are agreeable, then, why kick LKY out?? Why kick PAP out??

So in order to change the mindset of Sinkies, we have to show Sinkies the problem with LKY. The problem with LKY, his thinkings, his meme.

But we either believe in democracy or we not. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed...

If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought, and no excuse, whether of security, should allow a government to be deterred from doing what it knows to right, and what it must know to be right...

Repression, Sir, is a habit that grows. I am told it is like making love - it is always easier the second time! The first time there may be pangs of conscience, a sense of guilt. But once embarked on this course with constant repetition you get more and more brazen in the attack. All you have to do is to dissolve organizations and societies and banish or detain the key political workers in these societies. Then miraculously everything is tranquil on the surface.

Then an intimidated press and the government-controlled radio together can regularly sing your praises, and slowly and steadily the people are made to forget the evil things that have already been done, or if these things are referrred to again they're conveniently distorted and distorted with impunity, because there will no opposition to contradict."
