JUST IN: Major incident at Jurong Shipyard
SINGAPORE: About 60 workers are believed to have been injured when a jackup rig at Jurong Shipyard tilted to one side on Monday morning.
The injured workers are said to have been sent to the National University Hospital (NUH) and Alexandra Hospital.
Channel NewsAsia (CNA) understands that at least five of the injured will be warded at NUH for observation.
Another 17 are at Alexandra Hospital and are being treated for injuries such as back strain and abrasions.
CNA also understands that most of the injured workers are from India and Bangladesh.
A caller to the MediaCorp hotline, Mr Eric Tan, said he learnt from a friend who works at the shipyard that there are at least 50 casualties.
In response to media queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it did not receive any calls for assistance.
However, it acted on information of a large number of casualties in an industrial area in 29, Tanjong Kling Road.
The SCDF said it sent officers from Jurong Fire Station to the scene at 12.48pm. It said by the time they arrived, all the casualties had already been sent to hospital.
