Did you know that before KFC and McDonald’s, there was already A&W? That’s right – as early as 1966, over a decade before KFC and McDonald’s opened in Singapore, A&W was here. The brand had multiple outlets up until 2003, when stiff competition and losses caused the brand to exit Singapore completely.
The brand’s reopening in 2019 at Jewel was met with excitement by fans who’d been wishing for the return of their favourite fast food chain. However, recent news of A&W’s outlet at AMK Hub closing down rather abruptly has left some feeling a little anxious.

A post by the Singapore Atrium Facebook page posted a photo of the entrance of the AMK Hub outlet, with the caption stating that it is now closed. The last day of operations was 20 Apr 2025, and mentioned to “stay tuned for a new store opening in July”. It also told patrons that the nearest outlet would be at Canberra.
Despite the optimistic notice, several netizens seemed worried that this closure might be a sign that A&W wasn’t doing so well again.

Once again, “high rental” was floated as a possible culprit for closure. The claim is not without some merit – there have been multiple stories in the past of hawkers and even bigger brands, such as Marks & Spencer, shutting outlets or moving locations due to exorbitant rental.

Other comments also mentioned that A&W didn’t “taste the same anymore”, and that the food was extremely expensive.

However, one comment pointed out the “new store opening” notice and deduced it was likely a relocation – either within AMK Hub, or in the same area.
What do you guys think? Either way, A&W doesn’t seem like it’s leaving Singapore anytime soon, so don’t panic just yet.
