Remembering Spore's dead

Oh you mean the monument just opposite the recreation club, the civilian war memorial.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_War_Memorial

As you mention it was built after "much lobbying" and it was funded by the donations collected by Spore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and industry(SCCC)

So its a privately funded & built monument & the only input from the Spore gov't is that it "supported" it. What does "supported" mean

Thanks for the info. I have often wondered about that structure, now I know a bit more. However it was a community based project & NOT a recognition by the PAP gov't:rolleyes:

I understand that Government and SCCC paid about 50:50 each. Anyway, I agree with you on 2 points. Government should have built it without lobbying or co-funding. Also, the lack of publicity and public education about it after building it, resulting in later generations not knowing what it's all about.

Perhaps there is a purpose in not drawing too much attention to it. If we knew so many dead still lie there, would Singaporeans have be so compliant about allowing F1 to pollute the place with its noise? And after a generation or two, they might say this means little to the people now, so let's reclaim this prime site....

Can't blame the school textbook writers. Who wants or dares to mention L.K.Y. and S.R.N. worked for the Japanese during the occupation? Might as well gloss through the whole eposide in a few paragraphs, at most one short chapter. China and Korea have been criticising Japanese textbooks for doing that too, but I agree with you, Singapore is even worse than Japan, and surprisingly so as a supposedly victim whereas Japan was the aggressor and understandably trying to mitigate.

wonder how many allied lives were jeopardized and operations busted (thus contributing to the length of the war and number of war dead) when willing collaborators were translating intercepted wire reports for the japs. the kempetei didn't just recruit local folks randomly. they were very selective and they conducted extremely exhaustive interviews to ascertain reliability and genuineness (authencity) even though these blokes made oaths of total submission to imperial japan voluntarily. only backstabbers of the highest calibre were inducted. it was understandable if recruited locals in such secretive circles were linguistically skilled malays or indians. suspicions grew more rancid when one of them was of chinese descent.
