A full-time national serviceman originally facing the death penalty for stabbing a mother of two to death during the Mid-Autumn Festival three years ago will escape the gallows.

The prosecution has indicated that it will reduce the murder charge against Soh Wee Kian, 23, to that of culpable homicide, which carries either life imprisonment and caning, or up to 20 years' jail and a fine or caning.

This emerged in the High Court on Wednesday, which was originally scheduled to be the first day of Soh's trial for murdering Madam Hoe Hong Lin, 32, at Mandai Tekong Park in Woodlands Drive 50 on Sept 22, 2010.

Besides killing Madam Hoe, Soh is accused of slashing three other women in the northern part of Singapore between January and May that year .

If he had been given the death penalty, then death would have been his only punishment - there would have been no caning and long term imprisonment. Now he has to face both, the possibility of lifetime incarceration without broadband or being released into a world he will know little about after 20 years.

Then taxpayers have to feed him for 20years. I prefer criminals like him dead. Save us some money.

So, we can expect another similar stabbing when he's released in 2033.

I'm not sure it is that expensive to keep a prisoner in Singapore. I'm also not sure if it is that cheap to have him hanged.

To keep a prisoner in jail, it is not only food he eat. The bed he sleep, the blanket to wash, the space he occupy, the guards to guard him, the electricity to light up his cell, the water to wash his cell and him, etc.... That is just for a single prisoner, times that if no death penalty, and number of years. It's not cheap. In fact, if I am not wrong, it can be lucrative and some of USA prisons are run privately and not by state.

It's not cheap either to hang him.

The hangman allowance, the doctor to certify him dead, the people to witness he died humanely, the undertakers, the morgue and paperworks and plenty more.

If he behaves himself while in prison....he'll be released even earlier than that.

As bro said, he will be used as cheap labour....but not sure if able to offset the cost of his upkeep.

Prison term normally give discount. 20yrs term can discount till 15-16yrs. Some more he already sit 3yrs while waiting for trial. Come out still under 40 yrs old.

Not really. The prison & guards are already there. For the guards it represents a career.

Changi is a very spartan place. I don't think they even provide a bed. Food is probably contracted out to some GLC company already providing food for other instituitions like the army,

Interesting that nobody has demanded to know who his parents are.
Since he is presumably deemed to be insane and is not being held fully accountable, the parents should be.

You are right , there's no bed in changi only straw mat and most food are donated to changi because near expiry date or already expired for a day . NTUC is one of them .
