Recommendations to Increase Child Birth in Singapore

I read the Prime Minister’s suggestions of 16 weeks maternity leave with great wary. First of all, the 12 week maternity leave was only just recently adjusted from 8 weeks only on 1 Oct 2004. There would be repercussions to the adjustment.

Small & Medium Enterprises are likely going to be hit hard as they would need to cater for additional replacement for another month. Many SMEs are already feeling the impact of the slowdown in the economy coupled with the additional cost of rental, utilities, cost of products, raw materials and services being rendered.

With the increase to 16 week maternity leave, it would probably drive them to hire male staffs instead of female staff. When this happens, it would cause a huge imbalance to the gender ratio of those employed. Female jobseekers will face a harder time looking for suitable job opportunities as they face the risk of being sidelined.

I would like to recommend the following solutions.

1) Maintain the status quo of 12 weeks maternity leave. Encourage small business owners to leverage the internet to use remote access infrastructure for workers on maternity leave so they can do some light clerical work and access relevant documents using VPN (Virtual Private Network) technologies. The government should encourage companies to have a paperless environment and implement cost effective remote access solutions so that SMEs can have a more nimble and mobile workforce. If this is implemented, SME bosses would be able to create flexible work schemes for working mums. More women will have the choice of working from home if they wish to.

2) The main concern of most Singaporeans when having a baby is cost. However, a large number of parents encounter the big nightmare of having to squeeze a child’s pram in jammed packed MRTs. Manoeuvering a child’s pram is no easy feat. Even without a pram, it can be really dangerous as babies are really delicate. Most parents would really like to own a car. We would strongly request that the government waive off the COE for first time parents who wish to purchase a car and free Road Tax for the next two years. Similarly we would like to suggest a free 2 year Road Tax waiver for the second kid onwards.

I am confident that with these rewards in place, Singaporeans will be highly motivated to have kids and start building their family.

Maintain the status quo of 12 weeks maternity leave - this will not make women and their hubby happy but the SME will love them for that :D

mother to be are the biggest loser actually, no one is interested in a employee who will not be around for at least 4 months in a year and still get paid....extending the maternity leave is not going to solve the problem of low child birth..little pinky is simply choosing to skirt the real reasons why people are not choosing to marry early and have kids...it all boils down to money..

as i have suggested, the gov should similar to HDB grants, give grants out to encourage couples to tie the knot, then with pre-condition that they have kids within two or maybe three years after the marriage...give assistance to those who are having difficulties conceiving...state to pay for the child care, medical, educational at least up to college or Uni...after all the main reason why they want more birth to replace the population is so that they can have more slave to serve them in future...so it is only right that they too have to pay...

Hi Edmund Ng

Having a baby is not difficult but looking after the baby is a mammoth task that comes with love.
Especially when the baby is sick and running a fever, first time parents will worry sick, and getting the sick baby to a nearest medical attention may be a problem with such a crowded sinkapore.

having a car is of course more convenient to bring sick baby to clinic, or to hospital during midnight.

Unlike the past, sinkapore landscape has changed, our time may be over, but the younger generation really needs genuine help from PAP in order to boost the local population.

I think owning a car issue not subjecting to some PAP obdurate rules adding to the baby benefit may help.

cheers.

you are right. nowadays s'pore is so crowded and the shopping malls walkway is so narrow, its impossible to manoeuvour a pram .

imho, the longer the maternity leave, the fastest to bid farewell to ur job.

sumhow i pity n admire them at the same time, carry the big tummy, squeezing the mrt or bus to work n off work.

after giving birth, then shortly return to work in order to hold on to their job.

the people to pity are the guys whose wife quit to take care of the kids.
need to work doubly hard or 2 jobs to make up the diff

Having a child is a long term commitment.

Government can only help that much.

Well, I think when it comes to helping mums, first of all, all mums must receive help, let it be single mums, busy mums, mums who do not have enough money, and mums who are poor and have a lot of kids to take care of.

And the government should help in the area of healthcare, education, childcare and ensure that even as she takes leave to take care of her children, her employment is not in jeopardy. Particularly those who are working for SMEs.

But most importantly, and perhaps the primary one is this: The government should not treat new born kids and new mums as a bunch of economical statistics which can be shafted anytime the Government feels like doing.

This government has been interfering in people's sex life and in every single couple's personal affairs for a long time, has never respected the boundaries of what's private and what's public, and has treated every new born baby and new mum as stats which can be shifted around as and when they feel like it.

And as long as the government continues to disrespect the personal privacy of every Singaporean couple, and treats them like cold hard stats, rest assure that even if you hand out S$1m in baby bonuses, new couples or would-be couples will be moving overseas to get married and have a life overseas.

Even worse, like what's transpiring now is that more people are staying single, marrying only when one's in the mid-30s and in their 40s and remaining childless. The repercussions of the eugenic policy that LKY promoted in the 60s and 70s are now having a bad effect on Singapore right now.

That's not leadership that we can believe in.

Very true. If a couple needs to be "incentivised" into having kids, then better not. That's having kids for the wrong reason.

If can afford only one or two, so be it. Give them all you can to make their lives best you can. To the govt, your kids are a number, to them, you are their world. Happy procreation! (and bonking too :D)

Just change WP (Whore Permit) to WP (Wifey Permit).

Import 1% of China pussies population (1 mil) for SG peasant men.

1 mil of PRC pussies around SG island to hump...no one will go batam or hatyai anymore.

If half gets pregnant, how say liao....

1. Store and freeze the married couples' egg and sperm.
2. Couple continue working, build knowledge, career and wealth.
3. When couple retire, fertilize the egg with the sperm and produce test tube baby.
4. Retired couple will have the time, knowledge and wealth to nature the baby.
5. Child will keep the couple company since they are still dependent until late teens, so no lonely retired citizens.
6. By the child is grown and independent, old couple dies, can take over property. So no worries of buying sky high property.
7. Child accumulates further wealth and pass on to his/her child to buy property when leasehold of first property expires.
8. And the cycle goes on.

Problems solved with implementation of storing egg and sperm, and test tube baby at retirement age.:p

What we need in SG is PRC pussies....

12 week already too long. Will not hire those pregnant. And those pregnant will get less bonus and no increment will indirectly make those women resign. This is my way of getting rid......
I propose go back to 8 week and another 14 day added to annual leave to be taken flexible. If the child is sick the mother can take leave.

First of all, before we even talk about how many days of maternity leave to have, childcare benefits etc. we should ask the question, "Are Singaporeans even having enough sex?" otherwise, where do you think the babies are going to come from? The storks?

Singapore is full of news, reports, talk, daily and endlessly about growth, GDP, COL, work stress, packed trains, until our poor Singapore couple is so exhausted after dinner that there is hardly anymore strength, cheer, appetite and libido left in them to have a good night's romp before preparing for the next day's grind again.

Our leaders are also no help, bearing the stern no-nonsense, we're-Sinkies-no-sex-please public and private image all the time. The staid mainstream ST and TV media are also sterilised and watched closely, save for the naughty sexy exposes of the afternoon and evening street tabloids. Occasionally the Stompers will catch some naughty Ah Pek shagging some PRC syt in the park, much to the glee of everybody else in having frustrated somebody's lustful trip.

For sex to occur, there must be an environment conducive to it. I suggest the following:

1. Ministers should set the example and talk cock more often, and flirt more with the prostitutes in Braddell Road. Imagine Lily Neo in an ad for condoms! but ban HC!
2. Sexy soft porn mags, tabloids, should be allowed at bus stop exchanges, libraries, bookshops and the SPH brothel should also have a special evening daily catering to sex aids, sale of Viagra ads, etc.
3. TV channels should be liberated, e.g. allow satellite TV, to allow reception after 10 pm (after putting kids to sleep) of overseas free-to-air porn movies which must have a good storyline, and not just a mechanistic approach.
4. Public parks like McRitchie and seletar, should have more lovers' corners that are not invaded by the ubiquitous streetlamp post. Security should be enhanced against tomfoolery and nuisance from peeping toms. Police patrol could even carry an extra pack of Durex.
5. Parliament sittings could end with a tantric sex meditation audio so viewers feel "up to it" as they go for their dinners, sip that wine, and can't resist the groping before they even pay the bill.
5. Please add....

This will already help a long way

...

the answer is yes,
