It is unusual to appoint a newer Justice as CJ, when there are several Justices who have been at the High Court longer than this S.M.

did he really abandon central planning lol?how much of the nation's resources and nation's companies are still under the control of the state?go look at the biggest companies in the world.....all of them are chinese national companies under the control of CCP lol,these companies are hundreds of billions in cap,they rival even the market cap of companies like G.E,walmart,Exxon mobil,cheveron.ask urself why china has been able to grow so much faster than india,its because the government controls everything lol.....the companies,the resources,the land,the political power.this gave them the de facto power to do whatever they liked.

same goes for Singapore,temasek holdings has a portfolio of 240 billion,30% of that comprises of major companies in singapore.......singapore telecoms,singapore airlines,st technologies,singpost,smrt,keppel,mapletree investments,singapore power and so much more!!all these companies comprises of 26% of Singapore's national GDP,1/4th of the country's economy belongs to PAP,all power concentrated in the hands of the state......LKY hated the communists yet we are every bit as communist as communist russia lol....communism with a touch of capitalism.

No he didn't. What he did do was to abandon central planning, the hallmark of the Marxist-Leninist states, in favor of a free market economy adopted by capitalist systems. However, he had to tread carefully so as not to cause a major upheaval so he went to great lengths to package his reforms so that they still appeared to fit into the communist mould.

In theory, communism is fantastic. I too was much enamored towards the system when I was young and ignorant. Imagine everyone happily together all taking care of each other in a classless society where everyone is absolutely equal. No jealousy, no one upmanship, no resentment, no unfairness... sounds like heaven on earth doesn't it.

Not exactly. The Government courts are no longer the sole forum to resolve disputes. Over the last 20 years Arbitration has come to the fore front especially in cross jurisdictional matters. Menon has been key part to it and his reputation is well known. The long standing High Court judges do not have this under their belt.

When VK was first picked as JC, the fraternity was surprised. Not in the competency, academic or personality sense. It was because his father and old man had a bitter fall-out and rivalry over the attempted capture of PAP when it was a fledgling organisation. Father headed PAP for a few hours before the rebels threw in the towel. Eventually old man threw him into prison without trial and made him stateless (not over dual citizenship).

The move to bring in VK was traced to the need to make the economy attractive to MNCs to relocate their HQs to Singapore. BOA, VISA, MC, Caltex etc were all approached. The single factor that came thru was the jurisdiction of contracts. A judiciary tied to Lee and Lee and and a stable of MPs tied to. Drew and Napier and A&G was never going to pass muster. So they turned to well known rebel in the form of Rajah and Tann, both founders were ex -PAP and known leftist protected by Bank of China.

A new era was born. VK as expected was rapidly promoted to a judge and then surprisingly elevated to the Appellate Courts where h made his mark of dismantling ridiculous sentencing guidelines and decisions. The judges down the chain got the message.much of the damage was due to old man man and his wife' shyest friend Yong Pung How.

Menon is as apolitical as they come not by DNA but by choice. He was mentored early by Nicky Tan who is as political as they come. They did the high profile Barings case. Menon thru out his career had been low profile as he handled the big corporate cases.

Interestingly the world of Mamas converged when Menon was JC, Durai was sued by NKF and Shanmugam acted for the plaintiff. During the proceedings, Menon had to tell Shanmugam to behave himself.

Menon also spent his schooling life in western countries as his father was a diplomat. He does not tolerate abuse, rank pulling etc. During NS, he took a very senior Officer to task for abuse of sports facilities and the Sr Officer was actually disciplined. The guy abused his position to impress a young chick.

And the MNCs became happy. The PAP has never does anything without a clear agenda and money in mind.
