Radio Singapore was set up on 04 Jan 1959 after it was divorced from its Malayan counterpart. Vernon Cyril Palmer was its Programme Assistant. He later helped set up the first Channel 5 television station and spent well over 3 decades in the broadcasting industry before retiring in 1982. Vernon Palmer passed away in 2009. His son became a politician who won two general elections, held the post of MP for a total of 12 years, and was appointed Speaker of Parliament before resigning in 2012.
