Olympic legend Michael Johnson says a ‘superior athletic gene’ in the descendants of West African slaves means black American and Caribbean sprinters will command the sport at the London Games.

The Olympic gold medallist and BBC commentator said: ‘Over the last few years, athletes of Afro- Caribbean and Afro-American descent have dominated athletics finals.

‘It’s a fact that hasn’t been discussed openly before. It’s a taboo subject in the States but it is what it is. Why shouldn’t we discuss it?’

Reigning Olympic 100m champion Usain Bolt was born in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, where British Olympic boss Lord Coe’s plantation-owning ancestor George Hyde Park had 297 slaves.

Of the eight 100m finalists four years ago, three were Jamaicans, two came from Trinidad and Tobago, two were Afro-American and one, representing the Netherlands, was born on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao. All eight are believed to be descended from slaves.

Johnson says: ‘It is currently being researched to see how much of a factor being descended from slaves contributes to athletic ability.’

Some scientists believe a combination of selective breeding by slave owners and appalling conditions meant that only the strongest slaves endured, creating a group predisposed to record-breaking athletic performance.

African slaves underwent a rigorous selection process and only the fittest were transported on ships.
Interestingly, the toughest journey was to Jamaica, the last stop on the slave trail.

During one voyage in 1732, a staggering 96 per cent of slaves lost their lives – 170 boarded the ship and only six got off.

Jamaican geneticist Dr Rachael Irving said: ‘There was not much oxygen on slave ships so they had to use whatever they had to survive.’

Dr Herb Elliott, doctor to the Jamaican Olympic team, added: ‘Only the most aggressive and fiercest slaves ended up in Jamaica.’

Johnson, 44, had a DNA test for a Channel 4 documentary, Michael Johnson: Survival Of The Fastest, to be screened on Thursday night, which confirmed he is of West African descent.

He said: ‘All my life I believed I became an athlete through my own determination, but it’s impossible to think that being descended from slaves hasn’t left an imprint through the generations.

‘Difficult as it was to hear, slavery has benefited descendants like me – I believe there is a superior athletic gene in us.’

In my own opinion, I believe that africans/blacks have the best genes. They grew the tallest, the biggest, the strongest and are the quickest.. Good Genes.

And i somewhat believe in this theory of "Slave Genes" - Taking the strongest and migrating them, Their off-springs that follows will continue the Gene.

In ancient Africa, there were plenty of wild beasts which ran fast. You either outrun them or be eaten alive.

The survivors passed down their genes to the next generation.

Subsequent generations of slaves were the result of selective pairing is a known fact.

It is not that blacks hate water or that they are poor in water is not the reason. White parents can afford to live in suburbs and go to schools were competitive pools are present, programmes well developed etc puts them at a distinct advantage. Competitive swimming is taken up well before the age of 10 with parents bringing their kids to the pool by 5.30pm before leaving for school.

Eventually they will dominate the pool as well. After all it another physical activity.

Race is more than just the colour of the skin. Blacks have faster muscle twitch and pack more explosive power. They also have a better sense of rhythm compared to other races.

Yes, selective breeding plays a big part. It accelerates social conditioning. If you keep dogs, you will know the impact of breeding is irrefutable. All dogs are descended from wolves. Yet humans have managed to breed a few hundred species of them for different roles - from the chihuahua to the St Bernard.

Assuming all humans share the common ancestor from Africa (Out Of Africa Theory), our body types evolved according to the environment we thrived in.

This is why I have always advocated that the loser sinkies should be allowed to starve to death. It may sound cruel but ultimately, it will improve the sinkie gene pool significantly.

Assuming all humans share the common ancestor from Africa (Out Of Africa Theory), our body types evolved according to the environment we thrived in.

It isn't just the bodies. Brains are affected too.

Some of the smartest guys can't walk out of a forest by themselves while some of the toughest struggle with comprehending simple equations. Variety makes the world colourful, rich, exuberant, exciting and innovation can be seen everywhere.

The world is at the cusp of an extraordinary event - do we allow Medical and Insurance companies to decide on the future of mankind. The human genome has been mapped, the markers for many of the world's afflictions identified. Step in the wrong direction and we all become cane toads and fruit flies.

The Singapore Govt started playing in this field in the 80s. Women with only PSLE were given $10k to have permanent ligation. SDU did not allow mixing of singles across educational qualification bands, special events were organised for scholars prior to departure to allow relationships to form, etc.

Then cost of labour became the single driving factor and the rest went into the dustbin.

There's nothing wrong with selective breeding as long as a variety of traits are bred into the population at the same time.

Ok.. at risk of revealing private info, I'll share a true story here.

My dad was a true believer in eugenics much like the Old Man. During the early 70s he was appointed a "sports house" teacher-in-charge for a neighbourhood school. It was the first ever Sports Day for the school and everyone was excited. But due to inadequate sporting facilities in schools back then, the track and field rep selection process had to be very "efficient". My dad simply rounded up the athletic students in his house and allocated them according to race - Indians for medium/long distance running, Malays for short distance, chinese for long jump etc.. All the students and teachers in the house praised him saying that was the best team.. and the title would be theirs for sure.

On Sports Day, they finished last in almost all events! LOL!

hate to agree with you, but yes. there's anecdoctal and eye witness evidence (mine and friends) which suggest that blacks just can't cut it in swimming. even the wealthy ones with kids in swimming programs in good well endowed schools can't seem to keep their kids in the programs. thought at least the lanky ones can do well in breast and back strokes, nope. or the fatty ones can at least float, nope. or the powerful ones in butterfly and free style, nope. or at least the stronger boys can tread water to do polo, nope. most give up by age of 12. and they end up in athletics, indoor sports or team sports in the field. same with asian kids. even though parents push them into swimming, they learn to swim all right, but they can't compete in sprints, relays, long swims and polo. swimming simply favors mostly white genes with low bone density, large long frames, right composition of muscle mass and fat, and superb training and coaching. the latter no matter how one argues it just doesn't work if the physique is not there.
