The Sukhoi Su-27 is a twin-engine supermaneuverable fighter aircraft designed by Sukhoi. It was intended as a direct competitor for the large United States fourth-generation fighters, with 3,530-kilometre.
Recently Eastern*Russian Ministry of Defense*fighter and attack aviation pilots of advanced Su-35 fighter aircraft practiced firing “air to air” missiles at special thermal targets meant to simulate the heat signatures of an enemy aircraft.
“These are advance dog fighting techniques”, said one Russian pilot who wished not to be identified in this report.
Note: A dog fight, is an aerial battle between fighter aircraft, conducted at close range.
The firings took place at the sea range of Zolotaya dolina in the sea zone of the Sea of Japan.
It is to be mentioned that these are the first launches after the Eastern MD had received 4++ generation aircraft.
These *aircraft have a *fire-control system, at the heart of which is the N011 pulse-Doppler radar, which could track up to 15 aerial targets simultaneously and guide up to six missiles simultaneously. The tail “stinger” houses the Phazotron N-012 rear-facing radar. The aircraft could carry various bombs (including napalm, dumb and Cluster munitions) and both air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles; and had two additional underwing pylons.
Of course the aircraft* features many other upgrades to its avionics and electronic systems, including digital fly-by-wire flight-control system, and the pilot is equipped with a head-up display and night-vision goggles .
Now in cooperation with Su-27 and MiG31 crews the pilots will have to practice tactical elements using the unique capabilities of their multi-role fighters.
The tactical exercise of fighter and attack aviation is held in Primorsky Krai under the leadership of the Commander of the Eastern MD Air Force and Air Defense formation Major General Alexander Tatarenko on April 8-11.
The exercise involves over 500 Russian service members and over 30 aircraft Su-35, Su-27 and MiG-31. These were all identified as some of the elite fighter squads of the Russian Defense Force.

So exactly how good are these aircraft?
