Lee Hsien Yang calls WP’s Harpreet Singh a “conviction politician” and backs WP’s Punggol team
Lee Hsien Yang has praised Workers’ Party candidate Harpreet Singh Nehal as a “conviction politician”, expressing strong support for Singh and the WP team contesting in Punggol. He said Singh represents the potential for positive change in Singapore’s political future.
SINGAPORE:Lee Hsien Yang (LHY), youngest son of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, has voiced strong support for Workers’ Party (WP) candidate Harpreet Singh Nehal, calling him a “conviction politician” and praising his decision to enter politics.
In a
Facebook post published on 25 April 2025, Lee reflected on his long-standing acquaintance with Singh, stating they had shared conversations on Singapore’s political landscape and the need for reform.
He wrote, “We discussed Singapore politics and how one might bring about a better future for Singapore. We found that we shared a lot of common ground on what was wrong, and the need for change.”
Lee said he had encouraged Singh to enter politics in earlier years, although Singh was initially hesitant. However, Lee described Singh’s eventual involvement with the WP as a hopeful development.
“His showing up at grassroots activities with the Workers’ Party brought me hope for the future. I was glad he had chosen to step up,” Lee wrote.
He also highlighted Singh’s professional background and personal traits, suggesting these pointed to a promising political future.
“His obvious professional accomplishments point to his potential contribution if he were to be elected,” Lee added.
In a lighter tone, he noted Singh’s diverse talents, including playing the saxophone and speaking some Teochew, calling the WP team in Punggol GRC “a breath of fresh air”.
Urging Singaporeans to support the WP team, he said, “Punggol GRC, Team WP deserves your vote.”
LHY in 2019: “Today’s PAP is no longer the PAP of my father. It has lost its way”
Lee Hsien Yang has long distanced himself from the contemporary PAP, stating in a
2019 Facebook post that “Today’s PAP is no longer the PAP of my father. It has lost its way.”
He remains a vocal critic of the party and has grown increasingly
aligned with alternative movements such as the PSP, which was founded by Dr Tan Cheng Bock.
He joined PSP during the 2020 General Election.
Lee left Singapore in 2022 following legal and political actions involving his family. He and his wife, Lee Suet Fern, were granted
asylum in the United Kingdom in 2024 after citing political persecution.
Suet Fern was suspended from legal practice for 15 months due to allegations related to the late Lee Kuan Yew’s will. Their son, Li Shengwu, was previously fined for contempt of court over a private Facebook post.
In October 2024, Lee confirmed that he sought asylum as a “last resort,” but emphasised that he remained a Singapore citizen and expressed hope for a future return
