It's to co-opt the opposition to share in the potential future failure of Singapore to survive as a nation. Smart move!

However, I think that Singapore should survive well during the cold war with China. With India, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia becoming the factories of the world, Singapore should be able to gain a share of the pie if she positions herself correctly.

People still dreaming real opposition was elected to government. Anybody wonder why making lots of noise is not WP character.

They can called whatever they want but technically you are not an opposition if you can't even oppose bill in parliament simply because you have no seat.

Wp have rightfully place their footings in a sweet spot by focussing on winning the middle ground. It a position will not satisfied opposition hardliners 100% but when comes election time, overwhelming majority of the hardliners will fall in line to vote for wp even if it grudgingly.

Additionally ,through engaging in retail politics and consistent groundworks, WP can further reach out to the segment of heartlanders who are not politically engage and who would otherwise vote pap by default.

For the 'true oppositions' they will simply struggle to gain even inroad in the middle segment because the position they took is simply untenable

It is an honour for me to serve as an elected MP in Singapore. Equally, it is a privilege to be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition.

My Workers’ Party colleagues and I are lucky to have the opportunity to serve Singapore.

While I am grateful to receive the additional support and remuneration that comes with the title of Leader of the Opposition, the appointment will require more investment of my time and longer hours away from my family.

After putting the girls to bed, my wife and I knew there were some things we wanted to talk about arising from the LO appointment. Amongst other things, we spoke about what the salary increase would mean for our family. Both of us felt strongly that a percentage of the salary should be used for a greater purpose.

Accordingly, I will allocate 50% of the LO salary, after taxes, for the following purposes:

1. To assist low-income residents in Hougang SMC, Aljunied GRC and Sengkang GRC through the WP Community Fund (WPCF) and/or the WP Grassroots Committee; or
2. Community programs in Hougang SMC, Aljunied GRC, Sengkang GRC; or
3. Charitable or worthy causes; or
4. Workers’ Party specific needs.

The LO appointment carries with it many additional responsibilities that I will have to shoulder. The road ahead will not be easy but I thank Singaporeans for their support and encouragement.

Afternote: For clarity, 50% of the additional LO salary amounting to about $96K per annum is dedicated to the above purposes. The actual amount will be less after income tax deduction. It is important I make this clear.

Real or fake opposition is not important.
the results getting government to make better policies that benefits the Singaporean is more important.

Dear Fellow Netizens,

It would be foolish for the Leader of the Opposition to drink the wine from the chalice without testing it with an ivory chopstick. The danger of getting poisoned or dangerously intoxicated is very real.

He should also never allow the Prime Minister of Singapore to determine the parameters and the role of the opposition especially when he had said publicly that he would rue the day when he has to spend so much time thinking of how to "fix the opposition" instead of dwelling on the business of government should too many of them get elected to Parliament.

Then suddenly overnight and on the night of all nights on the night of the capitulation of another GRC called Sengkang in the watershed GE 2020 and without any warning consultation legislation or deliberation PM Lee Hsien Loong suddenly created the Office of the Leader of the Opposition. The obvious question to ask is Why?

Perhaps it was the magic number of 10 that he lost to the WP; perhaps it was because of the prolonged stress of fighting Covid-19; perhaps he could read the writing on the wall; perhaps he realizes that the 4G n 83 newbies n oldies that he has orchestrated into office cannot usher the country to a safe sanctuary beyond the post Covid-19 and post- globalization world; or perhaps he was merely trying to sow discord into the ranks of the opposition but the eyes n ears of the people are always open n able to see whether the leopard can ever change its spots.

But we do know dat the leaders of the PAP from the father to the son to the unholy Goh have never been the champions of the Westminster model of government. If they had been there would never have existed a one-party state for the past 61 years. The pendulum of democracy would have swung from right to left and the rift between the rich and the poor would not have been so great. So on the rise of the new watershed we must examine the rationale behind the sudden change of heart and never forget dat the tiger will ever change its stripes.

It is very astute for the newly proclaimed Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh to donate half the remuneration of the newly created office to charity or any worthy cause dat he and his colleagues deem fit. Not to do so is to allow himself to be painted into the unenviable position of not being able to call the kettle black. It is also wise of him to say that he has to consult the views of the NCMPs of the Progress Singapore Party before sipping the old wine from the new bottle.

The new Leader of the Opposition should also not be distracted by the empress dowager. If she cannot donate anything publicly for having received so much after giving so little that is entirely her business. But there will come a time when she will have to donate it all back.

What Mr Pritam Singh is doing now is to set a fine example for all his parliamentary colleagues especially the multimillion-dollar Ministers to do likewise. Let the parliamentary debate in August be centred on the motion of "What should be the decent living wage of the political leadership of Singapore in a Pandemic World"
