Royal family holds crisis talks at Sandringham over future of Prince Harry and Meghan
January 14, 2020 12:14am
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have released an extraordinary statement, effectively quitting as senior members of the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Prince William have taken the extraordinary step of releasing a joint statement denying claims of “bullying” ahead of a royal summit at Sandringham.
On Monday morning UK time, the brothers released a statement via Buckingham Palace saying: “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge.”

“For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful.”

It came after a source told The Times the falling out between the brothers began around the time of the Sussex’s wedding in May 2018 when Prince Harry believed Prince William did not do enough to welcome Meghan into the family.

The newspaper also reported the couple felt constrained by their royal roles within the palace, where Prince William will always take precedence as the heir to the throne.

“If you are Meghan and Harry and you have had two years of constantly being told your place, constantly bullied as they would see it, constantly being told what you can’t do, Meghan has been thinking ‘This is just nuts, why would anyone put up with this?’” the source said.

It comes as the royal family is set to hold a crisis meeting at the Sandringham estate to thrash out plans for the future of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Prince Harry will face a showdown with his grandmother, the Queen, father, Prince Charles and brother, Prince William, while his wife Meghan will dial in from Canada.

It’s the first time the family has met face-to-face following the Sussex’s bombshell announcement that they would “step back” as senior royals and work to achieve “financial independence”.

The shocking statement was reportedly rushed out after The Sun newspaper reported the couple were considering moving to Canada and possibly even walking away from their HRH titles.

At the time, Buckingham Palace responded with a terse statement saying: “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

Senior royal staffers reportedly spent the weekend locked in talks over how the future for the couple could work.

Key issues up for negotiation include their royal titles, duties, security arrangements, any commercial deals and funding arrangements as well as where the couple will live and their immigration status.

Last week the couple returned to London and visited Canada House to thank them for their hospitality during a six-week break over Christmas when the couple stayed in Vancouver.

Three days later Meghan returned to Canada where she had left their eight-month-old son, Archie, with his nanny. The couple have also reportedly taken their two dogs to Canada.

Ahead of the summit The Times newspaper reported Prince Harry would be “heartbroken” at having to cut ties with his family, but Meghan had warned: “It’s not working for me”.

“She wants to leave,” the friend said.

“Harry is under intense pressure to choose. It is sad. He loves the Queen. He loves this country.

“He loves all his military stuff and I think it will genuinely break his heart to leave.

“I don’t think that’s what he really wants. I think they want some halfway house.”

News of the Sussex’s decision has sent shockwaves through Britain, with a sense of sadness the rift between the two brothers has become so deep.

Friends and royal aides have spoken of the “hurt” and “disappointment” inside with family. ITV journalist Tom Bradby wrote in the Sunday Times the couple felt they had been “driven out” and said the damage began around the time of the wedding in May 2018 when “damaging” things were said.

He also claimed a bitter split could lead to a no-holds-barred interview with the couple that would be toxic for the royal family.

“I have some idea of what might be aired in a full, no-holds-barred sit-down interview and I don’t think it would be pretty,” Bradby wrote in The Sunday Times.

He said Harry and Meghan found other royals “jealous and, at times, unfriendly,” making it clear that did not include Queen Elizabeth II nor her husband, Prince Philip.

Typical kia bor beta chump. It happens regardless of one's SES.

She could be assassinated like Diana.

A dead woman claims no alimony.

More importantly, she won't be able to give interviews, write books. Tell the media stories. Better to have her silenced forever.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to drop 'royal highness' titles, pay for Frogmore Cottage renovations

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan will no longer use the titles "royal highness" or receive public funds under a new deal the pair has struck with Buckingham Palace after announcing they would be stepping aside as senior Royals.
Giving details of the split, the palace said Harry and Meghan would cease to be working members of the Royal family.
Here are the key messages from Buckingham Palace:
  • Harry and Meghan will still be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex
  • The couple will no longer use the titles of "royal highness", but they are not being stripped of them
  • Harry will remain a prince and sixth in line to the British throne
  • They will not be funded by taxpayers' money and will pay for the Frogmore Cottage renovations themselves
  • They will no longer formally represent the Queen
Will they still be publicly funded?
The couple are largely funded by Prince Harry's father, Prince Charles, through income from his Duchy of Cornwall estate.
It's not clear if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to continue to access these funds.
But the couple also have their own money.
The Duke inherited an estimated 7 million pounds ($13 million) from his late mother, Princess Diana.
He also received an inheritance from his great-grandmother, though that figure is not known.
He also received an estimated 50,000-pound annual salary as a helicopter pilot for the Army Air Corps.
Meghan has her own money from a successful acting career.
Forbes has estimated that she has a net worth of about $US2.2 million ($3.2 million).

The agreement calls for Meghan and Harry to repay 2.4 million pounds ($4.7 million) in taxpayers' money that was spent renovating a house for them near Windsor Castle, Frogmore Cottage.
The couple had already paid for the fixtures, fittings and furnishings in the renovation themselves.
The refurbishment included new electrical wiring, replacement of defective ceiling beams and floor joists, new heating systems and the installation of new gas and water mains.
The use of public funds to ready their home had raised ire in the British press.
Will they still carry out royal engagements?
While Meghan and Harry will no longer represent the Queen, the palace said they would "continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty" while carrying out their private charitable work.
On the couple's Instagram account they said they planned to continue to honour their "duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".
They will also divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America.
The withdrawal of Harry from royal engagements will increase the demands on his brother, Prince William, and William's wife, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.
It currently is taxpayer-funded and carried out primarily by a special unit of the Metropolitan Police, also known as Scotland Yard.
"There are well-established independent processes to determine the need for publicly funded security," Buckingham Palace said.
Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were talks in progress about the issue, but did not give details on any concrete plans.
"There's still a lot of decisions to be taken by the Royal family, by the Sussexes themselves, as to what level of engagement they choose to have," he told Canadian network Global News.
"We are obviously supportive of their reflections, but have responsibilities in that as well."
Where will they be living?
It is not known where in Canada they plan to locate.
They are thought to be considering Vancouver Island, where they spent a long Christmas break, or Toronto, where Meghan filmed the TV series Suits for many years.
Meghan made a public appearance at a women's centre on Tuesday (local time) in Vancouver.

We don't have an exact date but the palace said the changes would come in the "spring of 2020".
That means sometime from mid-late March onwards.
How does the Queen feel about all of this?

Queen Elizabeth II had warm words for the pair in a statement on Saturday (local time).
The 93-year-old Queen said she was pleased that "together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family".
"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family," she said.
"I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.
"It is my whole family's hope that today's agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life."
Harry and Meghan have grown increasingly uncomfortable with constant media scrutiny since the birth in May of their son, Archie.
When asked about the impact public scrutiny has had on her physical and mental health in October last year, the Duchess said that any woman — especially when pregnant — felt "really vulnerable".

She added: "You add this on top of just trying to be a new mum or trying to be a newlywed, it's um ... yeah."
Harry also described the media's treatment of Meghan as bullying, akin to the treatment his mother Princess Diana endured before her death in a 1997 car crash.
The Queen's announcement came after days of talks among royal courtiers sparked by Meghan and Harry's announcement last week that they wanted to step down as senior royals and live part-time somewhere in Canada.
The new arrangement will represent an almost complete break from life as working Royals, especially for Harry.

2.2 million net worth is peanuts. I'm shocked it is so low if she is supposedly a successful actress.

Harry is a looser for marrying an ex divorcee ah soh. He should marry a princess from other royal families except mudslimes ones to cement his position as a senior royal.

Harry should have married a princess from another country which would have forged stronger alliances and ensured his relevance. Beside ang mor royalty he could have married thai or jap ones. Just avoid the mudslimes if not he will really loose his titles. His biggest mistake was marrying Meghan. She is unsuited for the role n not really popular.
hallo... you missed the part of him having no taste. Any old thing he will also hantam.

'No other option' for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle than splitting from Royal family
Updated 6 minutes ago
Prince Harry has said it brought him great sadness that he had to leave his royal duties after agreeing with Queen Elizabeth that he and his wife Meghan would step down from official roles to seek an independent future.
Buckingham Palace and the Queen announced on Saturday that Harry and Meghan would no longer use their "royal highness" titles nor receive any public funding as part of a deal to end a crisis the couple sparked by announcing they wanted to reduce their duties and spend more time in North America.
In a speech to the Sentebale charity on Sunday, a clearly upset Harry said the final outcome was not what he had wanted.
"I want you to hear the truth from me, as much as I can share not as a Prince, or a Duke, but as Harry, the same person that many of you have watched grow up over the last 35 years, but with a clearer perspective," Harry said.
"The UK is my home and a place that I love. That will never change.
"It brings me great sadness that it has come to this. The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back, is not one I made lightly.
"It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges.
Prince Harry and Meghan have struck a deal with the Queen. Here's how it works

"And I know I haven't always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option."
Under the Queen's arrangement, Harry will remain a prince and the couple will keep their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they begin a new life split between North America and Britain, but they will not take part in any future ceremonial events or royal tours.
"I have grown up feeling support from so many of you, and I watched as you welcomed Meghan with open arms as you saw me find the love and happiness that I had hoped for all my life. Finally, the second son of Diana got hitched, hurray!" he said.
Harry also assured the audience that Meghan upholds the "same values" he does.
"I also know you've come to know me well enough over all these years to trust that the woman I chose as my wife upholds the same values as I do. And she does, and she's the same woman I fell in love with."
He also stated that once he and Meghan were married, they were "excited to serve".
"It has also been a privilege to meet so many of you, and to feel your excitement for our son Archie, who saw snow for the first time the other day and thought it was bloody brilliant!"

The Prince said he upheld the utmost respect for his grandmother, his "commander-in-chief".
"I am incredibly grateful to her and the rest of my family, for the support they have shown Meghan and I over the last few months."
Royal commentators have said the couples' move amounted to an "abdication" from the "firm" — as the Royals are known — and showed that, under the warm words in which she said Harry and Meghan were much loved, the Queen had taken a firm and decisive line by insisting on a clean break.
"I will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me.
"What I want to make clear is we're not walking away, and we certainly aren't walking away from you.
"Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth and my military associations without public funding. Sadly that wasn't possible," the prince, the sixth in line to the throne, said.
"I've accepted this knowing it doesn't change who I am, or how committed I am. But I hope that helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step back from all I have ever known to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life."
He continued: "I was born into this life, and it is a great honour to serve my country and the Queen."
The couple's plans for independence, announced after a long break over the Christmas period in Canada, caught the rest of the Royal family by surprise earlier this month and left the Queen and other senior Windsors hurt and disappointed, according to Royal sources.
However, in a TV interview aired in October, both had made it clear how they were struggling with the immense media attention.

Harry said he felt his wife had faced bullying from some tabloids similar to that faced by his mother Princess Diana, who died in a car crash while trying to escape paparazzi photographers.
He told those gathered: "When I lost my mum 23 years ago, you took me under your wing. You've looked out for me for so long, but the media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us."
"It has been our privilege to serve you, and we will continue to lead a life of service."
Buckingham Palace have said the couple would no longer receive public money and that they would repay the cost of refurbishing their cottage in Windsor, which official figures show amounted to 2.4 million pounds ($3.1 million).
But certain details, such as their future security arrangements or whether the couple could continue to use the "Sussex Royal" title for their website and branding, have either not been finalised or publicly revealed.
Meghan is currently in Canada with their baby son Archie and Harry is expected to join her soon.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said earlier on Sunday he believed that the whole of Britain would want to wish the very best to the couple for their future.
"As I said before … I was sure that the Royal family, which has been around a very long time, will find a way forward," Mr Johnson told Sky News.
