A 28-year-old army captain, who was charged with making false entries in an official document, will have his case re-tried after a military appeals court quashed his conviction.

Sherwayn Tan, 28, had been fined $2,000 for falsely indicating he had used a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) facility to train soldiers under him, and another unrelated charge. He also received a letter of discharge from the Defence Ministry (Mindef) following his guilty plea in a Subordinate Military Court last July.

But on Monday, a five-man Military Court of Appeal unanimously decided that that the conviction be set aside following an appeal by the infantry officer, who is also a President's Scholar.

Tan holds an Economics degree from the London School of Economics. It is understood the SAF scholar, who enlisted for military service in 2004 and had a clean disciplinary record prior to the offences, is nearing the end of his six-year bond.

What exactly did he do wrong? Don't really understand the crime he supposedly committed.

That's our PAP press ...they only tell you what the government wants you to know. No more but less is acceptable.

How is it possible for a President's Scholar not to know that admitting guilt to the charge in question involves admitting to having made a dishonest entry in his document?

The question is whether he knew that admitting guilt will lead to his dismissal from the army. Why would you expect him to know it just because he is a president's scholar? Are they all-knowing beings?

This is a minor offence

no big deal!

Most likely someone above doesnt like him and wants to get him fired and needs some reason!

For a captain to be charged, at least must be an ltc to file a charge against him.

Hello, are you that ignorant? A president scholar is supposed to be the apex of the cream of the crop. If he can't even figure this out, then he is undeserving to be a scholar. A scholar stands to make $68 million over his lifetime. That's not money for mediocrity.
