Yesterday, Zhao Er Hui, 32, originally charged with attempted suicide, was sentenced to 10 weeks' jail for criminal trespass at the seven-storey building on April 1. He pleaded guilty.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Imran Abdul Hamid said that a day after Zhao was told by a foreman to stop work, he went to the MOM in Havelock Road on March 30 and told a case officer he had not received his salary for February. He also said he sustained an eye injury because of welding work.
He was advised to get a doctor to certify his condition before filing a claim against his company, Hong Yang Construction.
On April 1, he called his employer and complained that he had not worked for three days. His employer told him to take a rest.
Zhao then went to MOM and told an officer he had not been working for three days and wanted to quit. He said his company should compensate him.
After consultation, he managed to sneak through a second-floor lift lobby stairwell by tailing MOM officers. He then walked up the stairs to the roof, where he sat on the ledge, called his employer and police and threatened to throw himself off.
Two hours later, he stepped to safety after he was assured that MOM officers would help him negotiate with his boss.
Zhao, a father of two, could have been jailed for up to three months and fined up to $1,500. He apologised for the inconvenience caused to the Singapore Government.
District Judge James Leong, who backdated his sentence to April 3, told Zhao he should consider himself fortunate that the prosecution had not pressed further charges against him. 'Please stay out of trouble in future,' he said.
