A 20 year old polytechnic student from mainland China has been convicted of trying to bribe a policeman with $20, according to a report by a lowly Chinese tabloid yesterday.
The PRC student by the name of Zheng Lin had checked into budget hotel to have sex with his PRC girlfriend when he was stopped from doing so by three officers doing random spot checks.
When the policemen took down their particulars, Zheng took out $20 and gave it to one of the policemen, requesting them to remove their particulars. He was then arrested on the spot.
Despite the gravity of the offence, being a ‘foreign talent’, Zheng is only sentenced to nine months’ probation and 130 hours of community service instead of a jail term which is the usual case though the prosecution has lodged an appeal, arguing that Zheng should see some jail time of at about two to three months.
It is not revealed if Zheng is studying at Temasek Polytechnic on MOE scholarship.
Bribery of cops is a common ‘practice’ in China where a couple of hundreds of dollars can save one plenty of unnecessary ‘trouble’.
The PAP should consider starting a course to educate these newcomers from China on Singapore’s laws lest they start importing their ‘5000-year old culture’ into Singapore.
