Today, on the afternoon of the 29th of May 2012, I was walking in Orchard Road. This will be a day that will be etched in my memory for a few months, because it was on this day, that I nearly lost my life due to reckless driving by a foreigner.
While waiting to cross the road from Orchard Central to the Killiney Post Office, a car driven by a foreign national from China zoomed up onto the pavement to wait illegally to pick up someone. The driver stopped and waited for his friend. Still in shock, I walked up to him and told him off. “This is the pavement, not a waiting bay” I said to him. He gave a blank stare as if he did not understand me and he then apologised.
This is not an anti-immigrant xenophobic letter. The purpose of this article is to highlight the dangers of driving without due consideration to pedestrians and other road uses. It is to emphasize strongly, the importance of adhering to the traffic laws of Singapore, to ensure that no lives, be it Singaporeans or non-Singaporeans, are lost needlessly.
Foreigners and Singaporeans alike must understand that defensive driving is the way forward and that following the laws of Singapore is a duty and obligation for all, not just locals.
