POTS and pots full of steaming briyani were prepared on Sunday at the Khalid Mosque in Joo Chiat for its annual Charity Briyani Extravaganza.

President S R Nathan and Mrs Nathan, who were guests of honour at the lunch, had a hand too in throwing in ingredients such as ghee, almond and cashew nut juice, rose water and saffron extract to make the briyani rice.

Some 3,500 packets of briyani were sold at $10 each as part of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore's (Muis) effort to raise money for the President's Challenge.

In total, with corporate donation, the briyani drive raised about $50,000.

Muis, through other activities and a donation drive held at all the mosques in Singapore, aims to raise $100,00 for the President's Challenge this year.

The annual charity drive, which features a series of community-based events and activities, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

Mr Nathan has set a target of $8 million for this year's drive. Last year's President's Challenge raised $12 million.
