Police investigates 2 gangs for possible links to Downtown East murder

The Republic Polytechnic student was chased and hacked to death by youths wielding choppers in front of passers-by, apparently due to a staring incident.

Two gang names -- 'Sah lak kau' (Hokkien for 369) and 'Fong hong san', a gang believed to be active in Pasir Ris -- were apparently uttered when the youths confronted one another.

Nine young men is believed to have attacked Darren Ng and three of his friends.

One of the friends however, told The Straits Times that they did not know their attackers and that the attack was unprovoked.

The report also said that there has been a war of words among netizens after the murder -- with some exchanging insults and proclaiming gang affiliations.

The victim's friend have also received an online challenge to a fight by one netizen, who had stated which shopping centre to meet at, the specific time and date for the confrontation.

Four youths, aged between 18 and 20, have been charged with Darren's murder.

If found guilty, they have face the death penalty.

He said the assailants were heard shouting "369" or "sah lak kau" in Hokkien, referring to an infamous secret society in Singapore.

Said the STOMPer:

"A few weeks ago, STOMP carried a story of a man posing with a sword that had 369 written on it.

"Now, Singaporeans are riveted on stories about the murder of Darren Ng, which was apparently carried out by perpetrators who shouted 369 after leaving him to die.

"Are secret societies making a comeback in Singapore? Or have there always been secret societies but now their members have become more daring?

"The thugs who murdered Darren had no qualms about committing a serious crime in a public place teeming with ordinary citizens.

"Who are the members of secret societies? More importantly, who are the ringleaders?

"We now know that their followers are brazen young men who would not hesitate to kill.

"What activities are the ringleaders engaged in? Now that Singapore has opened its doors to the casinos, we must be careful not to let the image of our country slide into that of a lawless vice-den ruled by a ruthless secret society underworld.

"Is Singapore still safe?"

In on of the entries, Ho Wui Ming, 20, had promised to stop getting involved in fights and drugs after his release from prison for an offence he committed in 2008.

Ho is one of the three suspects charged for the murder of Darren Ng Wei Jie, 19, in a fatal stabbing at Downtown East on Oct 30.

STOMPer Gao Luck said in his email to STOMP:

"I chanced upon the blog belonging to one of the Downtown East murder suspects -- 20-year-old Ho Wui Ming.

"It seems like he used to be an ex-prisoner for some unknown offence committed in 2008.

"Written in one of the paragraphs on his blog, he promised to stop involving in fights and drugs and wish to start afresh after his release, however he has not seem to keep his promise and was involved in this recent murder case."

According to the STOMPer, Ho's girlfriend helped him to update his blog while he was in prison.

In the last blog entry on January 15 2010, she apologised for not updating his blog, saying that she was busy with her own stuff.

The victim, Darren Ng Wei Jie, 19, suffered multiple slash wounds and a stab to his abdomen in an attack by a group of youths after a staring incident at Downtown East at about 6pm on Oct 30. He died in hospital later at 10.55pm.

STOMPer Peacemaker said:

"I was quite appalled to read in the The New Paper that even as family members are mourning the death of Darren Ng in the Downtown East stabbing, another kind of fight is going on online.

"Condolence messages on an online video tribute to the dead teenager have denegerated into an angry exchange of words between Darren's friends and netizens, who think that Darren might have taunted his attackers.

"Some netizens claim to be gang members, and one netizen even challenged Darren's friends to a fight, setting down the time, place and date for the confrontation.

"Vulgar postings and insults can also be found on the blog of one of the four suspects charged with the murder, Ho Wui Ming, 20.

"He had started the blog in July 2008, together with a girl friend, posting pictures of himself and his friends.

"After reading all this, I wonder -- hasn't Darren's death taught them anything?

"A 19-year-old kid has died because of some stupid staring incident, and here we have another bunch of youths trying to start a fight online.

"Haven't we had enough of violence?"

"The dog was hurled into the sea from quite a distance.
