<TABLE class="georgia11 whiteBg" border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=620><TBODY><TR><TD class=padlrt10>July 16, 2009</TD></TR><TR><TD class=padlrt10>Police: It takes time to track loan sharks
</TD></TR><TR><TD class="marginbottom8 padlrt10">I REFER to the letters by Mr Edwin Ng ('Mistaken victim of loan shark driven from pillar to post', June 19) and Mr Roger Quek ('Quick to record loan shark case but slow on follow-up', June 20).
Mr Ng's incident was reported on June14 and two days later, a preliminary update on the case was sent via mail by the Bukit Merah West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC). The investigation officer called Mr Ng on June 20. Mr Quek's incident was reported on June 13 and on the same day, a preliminary update on his case was sent via mail by Hougang NPC.
The police will always strive to be responsive to public queries. However, the nature of investigative work frequently requires officers to operate on the ground or work outside normal office hours. Hence, they may not be able to attend to phone calls at times.
The police have thus opted for written correspondences on investigation updates. For loan shark and related harassment cases, victims are advised to contact the relevant officer from the NPC as the point of contact. The names and contact details of these contact officers were provided in our written replies to both Mr Ng and Mr Quek.
The facts and circumstances surrounding each case are unique. Leads in cases of loan shark harassment differ from case to case. Loan shark syndicates are organised criminal groups and operate in layers. Frequently, the phone numbers and bank accounts used in loan shark harassment cases belong to other persons who have subscribed to them and wilfully allow them to be used by loan shark syndicates. Thus, time is needed to track the culprits.
We thank Mr Ng and Mr Quek for their feedback and will continue to work with them on their cases. We would also like to assure the public that the police will continue with tough enforcement action against loan sharks.
