Many asked about financial aid
Poly offers scholarships, bursaries

HOW can I save money on my children's school fees? What are the financial aid schemes or scholarships available to students at the tertiary level?

You know the economic crunch is on everyone's minds when unlike previous Beyond O Level seminars, more people asked financial questions instead of academic-related ones.

The New Paper/Temasek Poly's 14th Beyond O Level seminar was held last Saturday at the Temasek Convention Centre.

And there was good news for parents and students.

About 100 scholarships worth a total of $300,000 are given out at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) every year, said seminar panellist and TP's registrar Diana Soh.

More than 800 O-level graduates, ITE graduates and parents attended the seminar aimed to address questions about the polytechnic's courses and entry requirements.

Ms Soh said there are three categories of scholarships available.

They are Scholarships for Newly-Enrolled Full-Time Subsidised Students, Academic Scholarships and Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Scholarships.

Ms Soh said that in the case of newly-enrolled and subsidised full-time students, scholarships are given to those who have outstanding academic results and good co-curricular activities records.

'The value of the scholarship is $2,500 per academic year and is tenable for up to three years of study in TP and may be withdrawn any time,' she said.

She added that Academic Scholarships, on the other hand, are awarded to second and third-year students who have outstanding academic records and have a track record of involvement in co-curricular activities.

'The polytechnic will select and award Academic Scholarships to eligible and deserving students. Students do not have to apply for the scholarships,' she said.

CCA Scholarships are awarded to student applicants who have contributed significantly to co-curricular activities in the polytechnic. Leadership qualities and academic performance are also taken into consideration in the selection process, said Ms Soh.

Bank loan

Aside from scholarships, needy students can also apply for various bursaries and financial schemes available to them, Ms Soh added.

Ms Soh added: 'Students requiring financial assistance for their education are strongly advised to take up the Tuition Fee Loan Scheme from DBS Bank which provides a loan of up to 75 per cent of the tuition fees.'

Last year, TP students received close to $1.5 million worth of bursaries, she added.

Another topic addressed at the seminar is Singapore's greying population.

To deal with this, TP is offering the diploma in gerontological management studies.

During the three-year diploma course, students will learn major issues facing a greying society and will prepare for a variety of jobs to cater to the aged.

These include managing a retirement village and being sports and wellness consultants.

Students who take this diploma are not limited to working in these sectors and can explore possibilities in sales and tourism too.

Wonder how many percentage points the bursaries are compared to the billions of losses incurred by Temasek. Seems more public funds are used to support foreign banks/companies than our own students .

Why is she promoting DBS-isnt it the bank that sold the Minibonds and çaused many of our old folks to loose their life savings ?

Highest paid ministers in the world= many parents cannot afford school fees for their children.
What a first class place.
